Sun June 30 –
Dearest Mom and Shirley Ann,
Hows Daddy’s pals anyway. I’m
still on top, eating like a horse and feeling o.k. It was so wet the last wk
that we didn’t do any field work. Worked on combine 2 days and Rawl went al
over and now has about all the repairs he needs. He bought a new tractor
yesterday. Some make as the old one, but its sure a dandy. He has put a lot of
new stuff on combine so it should run like new. The wheat is turning more
everyday, so if the weather stays dry and sunshiny it won’t be long before
hervest. The ground is so wet that there are water standing in the low spots in
the Plowed fields.
I hope the weather stays dry
so we can get to working and keep at it till we get done as time goes too slow
for me when I’m laying around. It wouldn’t be so bad if you two were here You
know I get lonesome for you two.
Hope you enjoyed your
vacation did you stop at Harold & Jennies? Is Shirley there with you or is
she in La Grande? Hope she’s with you. How was the wedding? Tell Valorie that
was a dirty trick for her to do, to get married when I was gone.
After we get the work done
here. I intend to go down to Osb Co and visit for a while, Roll tells me that
two of the boys who are running a Body and Fender ship in Hoxie, went to a
school in KC. I want to talk to them and find out all about it. How much it
costs, How long it takes and all. If I decide to take it up, I’ll go there
before I come back to Seattle. Then I may stop off in Utah for a few days
before I come back. It might be I could get school over with by the time
hunting season starts Any way those two should know about it.
I wrote Irvin a while back
also Albert, and I got a Sympathy card to send Kit. Did you find out any more
from Pearl about Ell’s death. I suppose he’s better off if he couldn’t stop
drinking. John Pratt will be just like him.
We don’t get any news of
Natoma nor any from the N. West. They only take a topeka paper and it’s a day
or two late getting here.
Hows every one in the
project? Are there many striking there over Congress passing the Labor Bill? I
suppose the machinist are hollering their heads off. Are there many calls for
men in the papers? Did Martin quit? Are you getting many eggs now?
Today is real cool and
clowdy. I suppose we will get another rain before its over.
Keep your eyes on the look
out for Body & Fender men in the papers. It looks like a good trade to be
in. Don’t you think? How are Floyds making it and what did Forest say about
work there. I’ve kept my eyes out for clothes for you an Shirley Ann, but they
are too high here.
May be I can find something
in Osborne. A girl in New Zealand, that was engaged to Harold Miley, the boy
that was killed on Gum, writs to Alice, so I’m sending you a couple of amps.
Hows everything in Wallowa?
Did you see Bill C? Alices chicken are falling off on their laying now but the
eggs have a better flavor than Puget Sound eggs. What all did you do and who
all did you see on your vacation Shirley Ann? Write me about it. I suppose
Spooky had a good time and Ill bet he’s gorwing like a weed. Is he as fisty as
ever?
How are Bills, Charley’s and
Genes? Oh, yes the yard and flowers also Ruby and Leona? Where is Seona
working?
We don’t see any air planes
here and it sure seems odd. Most of the big planes are south and north from
here so guess that’s the reason. Are many moving out of the project? Any more
murders and robberys there?
The last letter I got from
you was when you were in La Grande. You had gotten back from Wallowa. Alice,
Roll, and two kids are asleep, its 2.30 in the afternoon. I’ll finish this and
lay down for a bit. They talked of going to Hoxie this evening so will have
them mail this. I back my letters this way, so may be you will get them. We
have very poor mail service on the route here. Well must close. Always your
forever – with oodles of Love, Daddy -
