LETTERS FROM THE PAST

This blog is to honor those who have come before us. These are family letters that I have had for years and wanted to be able to share them with family. It's an interesting way of knowing how life was in the past.

Myron F Taylor with 3 of his buddies in 1952. Over the last 20 years I've been working on our family letters. Letters that have been passed down. Including letters from my parents to my great-grandmother. Every letter was saved by my great grandmother and grandmother. I hope someday to either print them or give them to a museum. I am copying the letters–not being able to photocopy all of them. Each letter is in script. I know today very few can read them. I hope you enjoy them.

Rosaeltha White - Unknown date

Thursday Morn

My dear Husband

I didn’t receive any letter from you Tuesday night & was very much disappointed. Are you sick or did you mail one & it could not get thro’. If you were sick Mr Huckins would surely have miltes. We are as well as usual. I wrote a long letter & mailed Tues & will write more than this by next mail. Did not get home from Mrs. Richey & until dark last-eve. Mr. Colvin came yesterday morn & surprised them. Walked out from Ottawa. Rose, Nellie are in ecstasies about it, no other new that I know of. Ella Gallawy intends starting west – next Tuesday. Now darling If I don’t get a letter tonight don’t know what I shall do. Do be careful & not get sick. Accept ever so much love & excuse this scratch from your loving

Geo. & Violet White Dec 9th, 1942

 Luray Kansas

Dec 9, 1942

 Dear Mable Archie & Shirley,

Rec’d your Christmas card and the nice letter inside. Was so pleased to hear from you and to know you are getting along so well.

We are well. Been having terrible cold weather here now for over a week zero and below every morning. Ground has been white with snow since the day before Christmas not over 6 or 8 in on level but has drifted a little.

Had a letter from Fred White said they had two ft on level and drifts 5 ft deep.

Curry was along today Rosa’s husband. He travels and sells combines you know. Helen is still in Calf Dale works in the Volte Air Craft & Helen still works in the walnut house. Began work there two years in Sept. They closed down in March last summer & didn’t open until Oct. but she drew her compensation check $10.00 a week until they opened. She is an over seer or check girl has a table of 20 women & girls empty’s their boxes of nuts & grades them & punches their card and one for herself keeps her busy. There are always around 150 girls women working there. She makes about $18.00 a week. Dale gets $5.00 a day. Dale was off work a couple of mo’s had an appendix operation. Gary is in 2nd grade. Was 7 yrs old Xmas day.

Howard & his wife came home from Calif. A couple of years ago in Oct her father died.

Then they went to Kans City and have been down there now two years this month they both work and make pretty good she does off ice work.

Lucille is quite a big girl will be 12 yrs old the 9th of Mar. Anyone would think she was 14 or 15 that didn’t know her. She is in 6th grade. Plays basket ball and plays in the band.

Your new range must be very pretty. Yes I know everyone out there burns wood. I visited Cliff a couple of years ago and they had a nice white range stove. We would sure love to visit you folks but it seems so hard for George to ever get away from home any more and money is always so scarce.

Has so much land to look after since Cy’s death & Ruth has moved to Osb. He put that place out to wheat himself hired it done so if there is any wheat this year it will all be his own. He went up there every day for 3 mons from fall to Christmas. The old place was so terrible run down.

Everett Dawe & wife live down at the stone house. He and Everett painted the old red roof sure does look nice had to all most build a new porch on North East & south porch was so rotted out & put on new shingles on roof of porch.  Tore the south part of the barn off and patched up the north part & shingled it new and fixed up grainers & machine shed and painted them red. You sure would hardly recognize the place.

Has had two or 3 new government pounds on that place was two then had another on built over west this fall has a nice pond down on the place where Everett lives that keeps the well down by the barn supplied with water now.

Geo. Bought 120 head of young cattle a year ago last fall sold them this Dec. made good money on them.

He now wants to buy about 75 head of cows. Bought and old Mother pig and 10 little pigs 2 weeks old about a mo. Ago paid $66.00 for her isn’t that a terrible price.

Everett & wife are both good workers had a pretty nice garden and she canned lots of things had their potatoes & squash & pumpkins.

Geo. Had Everett put outa sack of potatoes for us and we got around 15 br. in return sold some & still have potatoes. Last spring Everett had a horse struck by lightning he skinned the horse sold the hide and bought 50 little chickens and had them up in the brooder house & ten old hens setting in there and lightning struck it one night and burned it to the ground. Was such a loss to them & made her chicken’s a little late, but she kept right on trying and raised quite a nice little flock. My this war is getting to e serious don’t know when Howard might be called am afraid it won’t be long they are going to take so many in Feb. Helen is 30 miles from Los Angles (ave) 18 mi from Long Beach. They have only had one black out at Orange. Her address is 136 W – Culver, Orange Calif.

Joe & Nettie moved from Dodge to Topeka, the first of June. He has a job traveling for a Farmers Union I guess it is they furnish his car & pay al expenses and get $130.00 a mo.

Well I must close & get to bed it’s 12 P.M. I couldn’t sleep so got up about 10:30 and have been writing letters.

 With lots of Love from

 Aunt Violet & Uncle Geo.

May 21, 1939

Dear Archie & Mabel,

Grandfather has gotten so he can’t write much any more so I am his secretary. Nettie sent this letter here to him and he asked me to send it on and write a few words. He is pretty weak most of the time but not sick. Eal’s about as usual but can’t walk without help. Can’t read much any more either so the time goes slow for him. The rest of us are O.K.  The girls very busy with last of school stuff. Tonight is the Junior Senior banquet. Elaine has a floor length dress of pale blue embroidered organdy, white sandals and a corsage of fresh flowers in pink & white. Has had her hair done at the beauty parlor and is taking a little rest before she gets ready. (That is probably something like what will be doing at your house, 13 or 14 years hence.) Well, you will enjoy seeing Shirley enjoy it and just think what the folks who don’t have them to plan for and spend their money on miss. Elizabeth is to serve so she will enjoy it too. She will wear a navy blue dress and tiny white apron and a white thing like a maids cap in her hair. She getting ready now for the waitresses must be there by 6 o’clock. Wilma and Richard are playing ball on the west side of the house. Kathleen has gone to town on an errand and Wm is of course out with the truck. Business is picking up now so Wm is pretty busy.

We hope you are all O.K. again. Write when you have time. Joe sent a letter of yours to Father, Archie & her enjoyed it a lot. So did the rest of us. You write a very interesting letter.

Love and best wishes, Katie

Dear Father,

How are you. I hope you are getting along O.K. we have been having a few nice days. I been irrigating my Garden. It looks nice. I had a nice long letter from Nettie this week.

Geo left from Utah yesterday morning. He rode to Denver with Jess Terill and was going to take a Train or Bus from there. His Uncle Geo got him a job out there on a Ranch.

Frank Montgomery’s wife is being buried to day at quinter.

“2”

I got a letter from Harold yesterday. He says the weather out there has been nice for the last 10 days. He said he had to work until midnite three nites this week. He gets pretty tired.

I had a letter from Geo this week he said he took 6 fat Hogs to Grand Junction to the Packing House and had them Butchered and cured. It costs 4 cts per pound and 1 ct for the lard, he said he took back 1000 lbs of Groceries. They are a lot cheaper there than in Moah.

He said he brought his cattle across the River and they  “3” were fat enough for Beef. He puts them across the River in the Fall and don’t feed them a thing. His wife and the Boys will move back to the Ranch as soon as school is out.

The sowed wheat looks fine but the Volintue don’t amount to anything. I was talking with Ottis Benton last week. He has 1300 acres of Good wheat up by Goodland.

I don’t think John has over 20 or 30 acres left most all of his was Volintue.

There is lots of Barley and Oats. They look good. There is a lot of corn going to be planted around here.

“4”

Are you going out to Fort Collins this Spring. If you do you want to stop here on your way out and see us.

Bess is not a bit well.

Rasus folks are all well. It keeps her pretty busy tending Telephone doing the House work and looking after the little kids well I will close for this time ans soon

Love, Fred

PS give any regards to Wm & Kattie & the Girls & Dick.

Glasco, Kans –

Dear Nettie & Mattie:

Was glad to get Netties card – had thought of you so many times {perina} . I have so many to write to & it is more of a task any more. – I try to write the boys often – I used to depend on Adaf for some of the writing – we rather took turns writing the boys – but now I have that to do & of course write to Betty often as I can. I am always glad to hear from you girls. I have been thinking so much about your Father & thought I would write to him but just haven’t – I wrote to Wm. & Katie & George’s & Ruth & Cy – after we were there – but haven’t heard anything more – well we did get a Christmas Card too from Martha & John. I saw by the Salina Journal they had a car accident & have intended writing them – I also wanted to tell you about the Morton Fletcher family also the Chet Wentworth family that went from here to Ft. Collin’s. The Fletchers are home now Jim just now told me. The Wentworths are in a restaurant or CafĂ© – she sent me such a pretty card of Sympathy after Adaf was gone. I appreciated it but never have written her – The oldest boy was here a week during the Easter vacation.  Ella & Jack Collend line at Grangeville Ida they are out about 40 mi. up in the Mts. May “Heggendorn” Fadely went to see them a year or so ago – Mary & Frank just moved to Boring, Oregon – Box 418 – RR #1 – the first of the year – it’s 11 miles East of Portland Oregon – Eunice lives at Joseph, Ida - & Myra Hockersmith lives at Kennewick – Wash – think Warren is with Eunice now or was a short time ago. Eunice Bentley – I couldn’t think of her last name – her husband died – Myras husband has been sick a long time – It would be nice if Archie could meet some of those people. We have been real well all winter – Harry is with us & has been since the first of the year – He can do quite a little choring – Jim was elected Trustee of Solomon Township this spring so he is away through the day so much – has been assessing but is nearly through now. We were down to Beth’s last Wed – Little Mary is quite a girl – 3 years old now – she talks so plain & is cute as can be – we enjoy her so much – Fred’s cousin Anna Ogan has been keeping house for him since in the fall – she is real nice & is lots of company for me. She is a cousin of John’s wife too. This has been a very windy day & so warm – We’ve had such cool weather for so long – Have had lots of snow & rain but these windy days dry out the soil. Maybe it will blow up another rain. Write some times we would be so glad to hear from you – would like to go & see your Father once more will try to if possible – Lots of love to all – Allie & Jim

Sat. Morn

Dear Father –

Another nice morning – I didn’t get up til 7:20. Am kind of lazy – Albin’s were out last nite & M. & Bob came so we played 3 or 4 games of “Pinochle” – We girls beat the boys – first game we’ve played for quite awhile.

I did not help M – yesterday – but I went to town to get a few things – also went to see a Chiropodist about my bunion –

Thought maybe he could suggest some thing to wear on it to help it – but most things have to be made to order & cost so much.

Did not have such good sales the last 2 days.

I am sending Allie’s letter for you to read, then wish U would put it in an envelope & send to Archie as he wants to know the Palmer girls addresses.

Joe re-built his trailer yesterday. I am going to pack some things & get them out of the basement today.

Got your card of Thurs – yesterday – we will ask Dales folks to take you some wine. Joe will go & get it & take it to Dale before his mother-in-law leaves. I wonder why its so expensive there.

Well I expect Helen will be glad to have Howard in Calif. Suppose H’s wife will go as soon as school is out.

George will have some long trips to see his youngsters.

Mrs. Albins are some better – but not healed yet Don’t know anything of interest. So, will close as it’s Most 9 oclock.

Lovingly, Nettie

Joe Seaman's Passing - Letter From Geo White to Archie Wineland

Osborne, Kansas

August 2st, 1961

Dear Archie and Mable

Joe passed away last Thursday, has been in hospital about two months. Guess the fortune teller told Mable the truth. I was down to see him a couple times. He changed his mind about be buried at Winfield and was buried beside Nettie in Natoma cemetary.

He sure suffered, His corpse didn’t look like Joe. I had a time getting hold of Bob as he was in the hills and I finally got him and he was at funera. Also Wm and Katie as they were in Bolder but are going on to St. Louis to see Richard and then are going back to Calif and then come back next July when they can get their house as it is rented until then. Dr. said out there that Wm would have to come back and take more treatments. He can’t walk without crutches yet.

We are having nice cool weather now and plenty of moisture.

As Ever Uncle Geo.

SE White to Archie Wineland May 20, 1932

Ft. Collins, Colo.

Friday A.M. May 20” 1932

Dear Archie and Mable.

Your letter of Wednesday on it was mailed from Natoma on Wednesday. Don’t know when you did write it for it had no date. Don’t understand what you mean about my not answering all your and Mabels letters right away as soon as I get them. For I am anxious to get letters from home so I answer them at once. Yours is the first one I have had from home this week and if I don’t get one this afternoon I won’t get one before Monday for they always come in the afternoon from home and the mailman does not come Saturday afternoons and after one has lived 54 years in one place that is his home and he wants to hear from that home and the folks. There could be no one that that me better than Bob and Mattie but Bob works night and does not get up until noon and he is always working in the afternoon fixing up the place and he is making it look nice. There was a barn when they bought it and last fall he tore it down there was a lot of good lumber in it and he put up a building 30 +40 made a garage to hold his cars and there finished off two rooms in it for sleeping rooms. He and Mattie sleep out there and I in the house. It is better for him for there is no dnoise from the folks that live in the home. We go out every Monday morning to the golf ground and he and Mttie play 9 holes. I go with them and I set in the car and road. Last Monday I played 3 holes done better than I expected for I had not played for 3 years. In 4 more days the fishing season will open and then Bob will go fishing in the afternoons and I will ride up in the (?) with him and take a book. He drives up 20 to 30 miles and sometimes more. We have been writing to Fred and Bess to come out for a few days. For they have not seen them for 8 years. He has wrote that he thinks he will come and if he does I will go back with him and stop and visit the folks there for a while. I have not been feeling the best in the world. They say the flu takes a long time to get over. I am in no pain but weak just all gone. I take a walk every day. Walk down once a week to get shaved. Once or twice a week to the Library most every day to the Post Office. I have wrote a 175 letters and 40 cards since I have been here. You say you have been having lives spells like John Meyer. I think Ruth wrote that Mr. Meyers had been sick did not say what with but that he was better. How is Floyd Meyers. Glad that Pat done will on his cattle. Tell Pat halo for me. You sure had god luck getting coyotes what is the bounty on them. You don’t know what hard times back there as they do in a big city for you get enough to eat and they don’t in the city. Bob says there is from 25 to 75 men every night at the RR shop the RR lets them ride in the box cars and sleep in them and they are on the go all the time. They will go around the slices and get a better meat a few potatoes bread & c and then cook it. You know in about all the streams in Colo there is a little gold not much but now when so many are out of work they are panning out gold. Bob and I see sometimes as many as 25 up in the Mts. They say sometimes they get 2 or 3 dollars a day. Well I guess this is enough. Try and write me again soon. With lots of love to you all I am

Luray, Kansas, 2/19, 1928

Dear Nephew:

Got your letter, wanted to come up last Sunday but didn’t get to and today is too muddy, Will try and come up when the roads get good – and before that old hen chickens are all gone. Saw in the Natoma paper about your Father’s death. Did you learn any particulars It might be well for you to investigate and if there is any property, to put in for your share – Your mother was a hard worker and a good manager – and when she died, there had a very good start, and you are entitled to your share.

Say these rains & snows are sure fine for the wheat, and I guess we all could stand for a good crop.

As Ever - George

Note: The property referred to was sold by the 3rd wife to her brother for $1. Then he sold it for a profit. It had been sold by the time Archie had an attorney. All involved where crooks. There was nothing anyone could do about it back in the 1920's. Archie lost everything that belonged to him and his brother.

Letter From Silas White - Oct 21, 1932

Ft. Collins Colo Oct 21” 1932

Dear Mabel and Archie,

Your good letter come day before yesterday. Sure glad to get it for I have not been getting many latly. Archie got my card letting about the boy killing the deer. While I did not get even a shot or see a buck I did injoy the trip for it was the finest kind of weather which we can have in Oct and you know that is the finest kind of wether. There were lots of hunters some women and some of the women got a deer. Some hunted the four days and I’d not see a deer. Wish you could have had some of the meat  Bob give a lot away sent some to his friends in Denver one of them was here last night and played Pinochel he said it was the fresest – he ever eat they were fat one of them a three year old and the other five. The girls caved up a lot. Bob and Joe went to Denver yesterday they asked me to go but I did not care to go. They are going out to play golf this a.m. Nettie has been out four times and Joe once Last Tuesday. Joe and Nettie went up to the cabin it survived up there four inches they stoped all night there is beds and everythings and a nice big fire in the fireplace is pleasant in a cold nite. Dale I think is about love picking apples. They were here night before last and he said he though he would send his and the young man (a cousin of hers) back and he would stay. She has been homesick. It has been lonesome for her as they have been away at work all day. She was up here several times and some of us was down there. I think this was the longest she was ever away from her mother. I think Dale maybe homesick. When she and the little one are gone. There is not much work to be had here but Dale will find it if anyone can. Joe and a man that lives in the home here have just gone up the rets 40 miles. And Bob and the girls to the golf grounds. It is sure a nice day. I will stay here and do some writing and reading this is the kind of weather one likes to be out doors. I don’t know yet when I will be home If Joe and Nettie go back I think I will go with them. I don’t feel like spending money on the train. Wish you would write me how the cattle sell in K.C. I have been feeling OK ever since I have been here except – a little cold the first few days. Hoping you both are well and with lots of love I am

Fred White to Archie - Sept 11, 1945

Silverton, Colo

Sept 11

Dear Archie,

I rec your nice long letter. That begun in June and ended in Aug. why don’t you get a Blind Sic to write your letters if you are to busy ha ha.

I have been sick since Sat with Inteslinel Flu I was sic as H—L. I missed a shift last night the first in since I been here over two years. Outside of when I had my leg Broke.

Clifford & Dude came over last Sat nite and stayed until Monday and we all went to

“2”

Ridgeway to the Rodeo Races and 4-H Fair and to the Dance at nite we had a good time that was the first time I had been away from here for a year I was over there last year. Clifford brought his Boy Geo Race Horse over there and run it in the ½ mile Saddle Horse Race and was first. He is 6 years old and is pretty fast he had him over to Grand Junction to the Rodeo & Stock Show and he beat everything it gets pretty chilly here nites. There was Ice yesterday morning. I got a card from Bro Geo Sat  it was from Old Mexico. They had been out to Helen

“3”

After Lucile she had been out there for a couple of months Bobs Boy Fred is back from Italy. Lyle is in Japan I think. They will have to put a Dog chain in every one of those Rats and stand over them with a Machine Gun. If I had Run things I would have droped a Hundred of them Bobs on them and blowed the whole Dam Tribe off the Face of the Earth. If they get a half a chance they will be ready fro another war in a few year. And of course the US will be the Goat and give them everything they want. I would liked to seen Rusa & Chime took care of them. I thought Truman was going

“4”

To be a lot better than Rosy but he seems to be following in his foot steps.

He wants to hush up the Pearl Harbor Deal I supose those Officers were Democrats. But if Old Churchill don’t get his Ham & Eggs he is liable to squeal. England is sure making a Squack because Truman shut off the Flow of money giving to England. If them Dam Halfwits would get busy and do something they might make a living for their ownselves.  Old Joe is liable to step in there and learn them a thing or too.

If Hitler had worked it right and left Rusia alone he could have taken England.

“5”

And I would liked to seen him done it if he would of let us alone. England is always starting something and them wanting the US to help them out.

Harolds folks are all O.K. he has about 40 men soon working at the mine. I would like to go back home this winter and see the kids. All I have seen from back there is Rosa & kids and Sylvia, Cliffords Girl and Rosa Dorris, Bobs Girl was here a week in Aug. Sylvia White is married to a Soldier by the name of Ralph Biggs. He & her  graduated at Healy the same year he is in a Hospital In Cal

“6”

He was wounded in the Hand. And she is in Denver she did work at the Kaiser Amineution Plant for nearly a year and was layed off and is working at Buckly Field now.

He is to be discharged in a couple of wees and then they are going some place to live.

Raul & Alice are building a new house.

Everyone had a good crop back there and got a good price for it. Andy Johnson’s Soninlaw died last week he was Cliff Bland he was Sheriff of Gove Co 4 years tell Mable & Shirley Hello and don’t be so Dam long answering this letter

My Birthday is the 24 of June.

Love Uncle Fred

Fred White to Archie & Mable - Oct 1945

Silverton, Colo.

Oct 26 (Postage stamp is dated 1945)

Dear Archie & Mable,

It has been since the last 3 days. Sunday your Aunt Bess and I have been married 52 years. That is a long time to live with one woman. The People here thinks that is something Wonderful.

“2”

Most of them here have been married 3 or 4 times. I guess they all like a change. We wrote to the kids and wanted them to all come out Sunday to Celebrate with us. But I don’t suppose any of them will come. They are all to busy if any Folks were living a Thousand miles away I would try to go and see them once or twice a year.

Mother is putting up Grapes that Geo wife sent us.

The Hunting Season closes next Wednesday I never

“3”

went Hunting as I had no Gun or Horse. They sure got a lot of Elk & Deer, and we have had several mese  of both.

We got a letter from Lyle and he told us he sent two Jap Rifles home they were 31 caliber. He is in the Philippines.

Fred, Bobs Boy is home from Italy. He has to go to some camp in Texas to get his Discharge.

I got two Pickup loads of wood from the Mine and had it saved up

“4”

and I put it in my Coal House yesterday I have it nearly full. If I had a Truck and a Power Saw. I could make more money than I could working in the mine. They charge $10 for a Pickup load of Blocks. I suppose Jo & Nettie are home now. Joe went to Wyo with some fellows to hunt and Nettie stayed with Mattie.

I saw in the Denver Post when Albert Moorhead got killed in Lymon last week by a car. I guess that must be my Cousin.

“5”

I wrote to Mattie and told her to find out for sure if it was him, but have not heard yet.

Harolds folks are all well. I think that Horse of little Geo’s is Steel Dut stock, we look for Clifford & Dude over Sunday. They live about 150 miles from us.

I suppose you heard that Howards wife got a Divorce from him.

Alice Miley is Teaching their Home School this winter. They are Building a sew Horse.

“6”

Is Ellen Wineland still living. Is this Hackerott Boy you talk about. Bills Boy. I know one of Bills Boys hi name is Ernie he lives at Atwood. He and Curry are great Friends. I went with him to McCook once when I was up there he drives a Big Transport all the time.

How is Irvin coming with No 7. Does she keep him the Hoasgow must of the time,

If you folks leave Seattle, you must come own here and see us.

Helen McClure left her and went to Seattle. She is a widow she has a aBoy & Girl with her. She used to cook at the Hospital here. It begins to look like Truman was following in Rasys foot steps. They had anight to Hang him if he loanes Britian any more money, it looks like there Halfwits could do a little something for themselves. They think the US is Santa Claus. Well I must close,

Ans soon

Joe & Stella Seaman - Dec 14, 1960

Tarkio, MO
Dec 14 – 1960

Dear Archie & Mable: -

I take my pen in hand to write you a “scap” to-nite. Got your good letter last Saturday and was mighty glad for it –

You are right this has been some year in a lot of different ways, The republicans carried all the offices in the state and every congressional Dist except the 5th which is southwest Kansas. Was disappointed in the National as I wanted Nixon – I don’t like this Chester Bowles that Kennedy has in his cabinet and a Mail Carrier in Topeka told me yesterday that our Next Post Master General would be a Nigro.

My old Friend Walter Peery of Topeka was elected State treasurer, Guess you remember him and his wife Florence. They were at Nettie’s Funeral in Natoma – Had a one page letter from Bob but he didn’t say much, He is O.K.

I went to the hospital on Oct 29th and after getting out I didn’t go to work until about Dec 5. Had prostate trouble. I’m going to retire Jan 1st and see if I can live on O.A.B.

We may go to the Gulf some place. Near Brownsville along about the Middle of January and get away from the cold for a few weeks.  Geo. & Ida were down to see us one day late in Nov. after I got out of the Hospital.

We are planning on going to Colo Springs for Xmas if the weather is good.

Yes I think the Huskies should beat Minnesota in the Rose Bow, but don’t know about MO, against Navy in the Orange Bowl.

I agree with you 100% on Politics and think we have taken care of Western Europe long enough and that they should help carry the load now.

I’ll bet you will be glad when Shirley, Myron and the kids can come home from Germany – Perhaps Myron will return to civilian life, if the Air Force isn’t going to take care of the Service Men’s families –
I didn’t get to go Deer hunting this year – But did have 2 week ends of duck hunting and got the limit both times.  Was sick during pheasant season – Drove by Squaw Creek Game reserve today and there were about 10,000 Geese there – Mostly snow Geese & Blue Geese.

Haven’t seen Bowlby in a number of years as I never get out that way – Saw Alan Palmer 2 weeks ago. He lives in Salina. He told me Geo. Musgrove was in Bad shape with heart trouble. His wife is your cousin, isn’t she?

I got pretty tired working and think a rest will do me good – Don’t know how long I can remain idle without losing my mind –

Will write again after the Holdiays as will have more time –

Hope this finds both of you feeling fine and that you have a wonderful Xmas. –
Love, Joe & Stella

Lizzy's Wedding Cake

I've been reading my great grandmother's diary from 1894-95.

I found her wedding cake recipe in the back of the diary. I tried to see if I could make the cake as she did. I think I was close. The "filling" is good. The cake needs some work. I need to figure out the difference between 1800's and today. They usually cooked ingredients, which I did. I then made the mistake of using a beater to add the flour. I should have spooned it in.

I will try to get more letters on here. I have a stack next to me on the coffee table. Thought everyone might enjoy Lizzy's Wedding Cake.

NOTE: PHOTO OF RECEIPT WAS ABSENT. WILL TRY TO GET IT BACK UP LATER. (8/6/2017)

Albert Hackerott, Jr. April 4, 1946

Thursday April 4, 1946

Hello Shirley

I wish you could have made the plane trip with me, it was swell.

Dear Archie Mable & Shirley:

I got home yesterday at 5 o’clock it was windy and quite a bit of dirt in the air but has been grand today.

I was lucky enough to get reservation on a plane from Portland to Denver. I left Portland at midnight Mon night & got into Denver at 8:50 Tuesday morning. I stayed over in Denver that day & night & left at 7:00 o’clock Wed morning hitch hiking home. I could have waited until 1 o’clock and taken the train but it was so windy & nasty in Denver that I was ready to leave. Anyway it took me longer to get from Denver home than it did from Portland to Denver. I saw bonnie & Del. He had to go to a union meeting so only got to talk to him for a few min. I was down to the rubber pant where Bonnie works  & had talked to her in the afternoon.

Dad has been painting & cleaning up the house & we are going to have one room papered Sat. I helped paint today so I got off to a good start on my first day home. The farm work is all caught up for a while but a lot of fixing up to do.

Grandma saved me a piece of the wedding cake so I got in on part of the wedding anyway.   We have to go to town tomorrow after more paint & wall paper & I guess we will paint the outside of the house if we get around to it. The wheat looks grand here but wasn’t so good in eastern Colo & edge of western Kansas. There was a lot of dust blowing in places out there when I came thru. I will write more in a few days about my fishing in Portland & goig up on Mt. Hood. It’s getting late so will close. Lots of Love, Albert.

20 July 1965 - Oma Whitson

Tuesday
20 Jul 1965

Dear Mrs. Taylor

Thank you so much for answering my letter and sending the sheet you filled in. I will add it to the White family tree. The chr meant christened and where the mar. was where and where you were married? Yes this is fascinating work. The more you search the more you want to.

The Benjamin White born 24 August 1949 and married Mary Fabs (?) was a soldier of the Revolution. He would be your 4th Great-Grandfather. So you could be eligible to be a D.A.R. I have thought about it some myself. I have a little history of some of these families and it tells of this one being in the Revolution. I am sending a chart of your ancestors. It starts with you and goes back as far as I have it. Alice Miley a second cousin, (first cousin to your father) is also doing some research on this line so maybe she can come up with some more.

I did want your marriage date and place.

Thanks again,

Sincerely,

Mrs. Oma Whitson

Yours of the 2nd came to hand to night and found us all well. But wet and muddy. Yes it has come to that againe in Kas we had a fine rain last Monday onyesterday and most all day and it is raining now and will be a raining night I think. I am sorry that your Mother is so Pour I was so glad to get your note saying she was able to set up. Mrs Herrick give an oyster suffer last Wensday night – (for a good by) Gant Lowe Lowe armitage the Dr and others were asked but could not come. Freddie Lowe came over and sloped with the boys and Mr H sent them some cake we had a very nice time singing & c
There was a young man that was going from Ravell to Bull city and had to stay over night at the P.O. and so he was there at Mr. Hs we walked down to the store after it was throughand I asked him what was his state and he said Illinois, County Lalalle. Town of Lorlant I told him I came from nar there he said aint you got a brother in Iowa by the name of John I told him I had he said I sloped two or three days with him last week, odd was it not, I think I will slop for it is time to go to bed good night my dear.

Sunday 10 o’clock. A.M.
Just got through with my work and will finish this so to send out in the morn It took me three days to take the rye down for my wagon was so poor I got my pay and paid that 20 dollars to Lane so Major is free. But am afraid I shall lose that of Phillips he has nothing and is going away this winter to work. It is kind of hard when I have worked hard. And then my boor came I shall not get anything out of that the rain came through the shed and spoilt Mat Louise and mine I can not get a cent for it, my bad luck seems to come all at once but as long as we are well and I have my loved ones I can stand it I wain hopes that by another fall we could get some kind of a little house for it is so hard for you. For I expect after you stay there in a good home and lots to eat you will not want to come back here to the little sod house on the hill.

And now dear I don’t like to say anything about it at this time when your Mother is so sick but would it not be well to speak to the boys in time about the money for it will have to be paid you know and I would like to know in time so if I have to pay it I can sell a horse or some of the cattle d not have them take it and have lots of costs to pay by the time Maloney is paid and the Bank I am afraid we shall not have a team I helped threash ½ day to get that wheat – of Fathers I got 4 ¼ bushs. I am going sowing wheat tomorrow shall put n 15 acre I am afraid that they don’t take very good care of the cows but she wanted them very bad and said she would sethat they had all the watter they wanted and feed the calf well the Dr thinks I will have to see and offer me only 30 for that cow that will be the way if I have to sell I cannot get anything for them you must write often for the (?) thing to you are your letters a kiss for Lizzie I have sent you two letters and a card and L has sent you a card. Ever yours Eben

Note: This may help in explaining why Lizzie lived with her Aunt and Uncle all those years.
