LETTERS FROM THE PAST

This blog is to honor those who have come before us. These are family letters that I have had for years and wanted to be able to share them with family. It's an interesting way of knowing how life was in the past.

Myron F Taylor with 3 of his buddies in 1952. Over the last 20 years I've been working on our family letters. Letters that have been passed down. Including letters from my parents to my great-grandmother. Every letter was saved by my great grandmother and grandmother. I hope someday to either print them or give them to a museum. I am copying the letters–not being able to photocopy all of them. Each letter is in script. I know today very few can read them. I hope you enjoy them.

Christmas ‘83

Hi – Merry Christmas from Minnesota. Was such a lovely surprise to get a phone call from Chris last winter. He & Bud had quite a chat judging from all the news bud relayed to me. Great to hear.

We’re all just fine. Our life has changed a bit since Kathy graduated in June. She started at Minnesota State U in Sept. It’s about 75 mi SW of us. Has been getting home every 2nd or 3rd weekend so don’t miss her too much.

Bud is working Sat thru Mon. 12 hour mid shift. Works in the computer room & loves it. (I call it retirement!) Gives him lots of time to party during the week.

Shel is at Northern Telecom. A computer firm west of Mpls. Seems to be doing well just started selling Amway products etc. p.t. She sounds so optimistic about it.

Val works for Metro WW Comm. Also, but in St. Paul. Has been there 5 ½ yrs. & likes it very much & doing well.

I worked p.t. at a garden & apple orchard about a mile up the road from us. The season just ended and I miss it – really enjoyed it.

Still have 2 leagues & occasional volunteer work.

My folks are just great, both retired now & loving it. They go to Oregon for a few months after xmas. Dad started golfing last year & just addicted to it.

Hope this finds you all well.

Blessed Christmas & Great ‘84

Eugene OR - Bill's Death

 Eugene Oregon

Dec 19, 1941

 Dear Mrs. Wineland –

Received your letter today and am sending you a clipping that will explain about Bill. It is a terrible thing and the man has been indicted on 2nd degree murder charge. His trial comes up Jan 5th and I wish they could hang him. He hit Bill with asomething and I don’t think Bill ever knew what hit him. I guess you knew Jennie left Bill and Wayne two years ago. Wayne joined the Navy this last of Oct. He was home just a week and we heard from him today. They had intended to send him to air school in Seattle but now that the war is on he will have to do Sea Service and heaven only knows what that means. He said he would let us know his address later as he didn’t know himself. I’ll let you know when I find out if you want me to.

I have heard Jeannie and Bill mention you folks but I can’t place you. Wish you’d tell me which cousin you are. You may hear that Bill drank a ot but don’t believe too much. He didn’t drink any more than the rest of the family. He was divorced in Cottage Grove and he had made a lot of friends there. I can’t yet believe he is gone. Jennie was here and acted mighty sorry. She went back to Baker, Oregon 2436 Church St. but I haven’t heard from her since she went back. Thanks for writing and would like to hear from you. 992 Willamette St. Eugene Oregon.

Note: This may be the other Wineland family that I have been trying to find. We met a Wineland that knew my grandmother but had no idea who his father was. Said his father was killed in Oregon and his mother never talked about him. At this time I do not know if he is Wineland or someone else. Article is missing from letter.

Handwritten Song

I do not know who wrote this. I don't even know if it is a copy. It's a death song from the civil war era. It's very fragile, so decided to make a copy of it. - Don't copy or use as this is a copyright blog. All rights belong to me.

Enjoy!

Col. Beisner

“Col. Beisner”

Col. Beisner assigned to Tac; ends tird tour with the 15th T.F.W.

Langley’s gain is Macdills, thought the Air Force continues to win.

Col. Gerald J. Beisner, 15th Tactical Fighter wing director of operations, will depart Macdill next week for his new assignment in the Tactical Air Command office office of Safety at Langley AFB Virginia.

In the two years that Col. Beisner has graced the Macdill scene, the likable and affable man has earned the respect of all those he has encountered.

Establishing a reputation of genuine concern and fairness toward others, the veteran fighter pilot’s departure is welcomed by few, altho accepted, in the light of the Nomadic tendencies of military life.

Keeping these tendencies in mind, it becomes a shock to no one then, that when the Salina KS boy, Native reports to Langley in July, he will have completed his third assignment with the 15th TFW.

His first association with the wing accord 24 yrs ago when he flew two World War II mainstay aircraft, the durable P-47 Thunderbolt and the sprightly and lethal P-51 mustang, while the wing was located at Wheeler Field, Oahu, then the territory of Hawaii.

Col. Beisner, perhaps feeling a bit nostalgic, commented on the lasting friendships and wonderful people who make up the 15th now as in 1946.

He confided “Shoe color, people and aircraft have changed, but the spirit which is at the heart of any topnotch organization has remained unchanged.

It has been a rewarding pleasure to be a part of the 15th history and accomplishments, and I wish continued success to great people of the organization.”

The Col inlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 for the purpose of entering pilot training as an aviation Cadet. He received his commission through the aviation Cadet program in 1944.

Since that time, Col. Beisner has spent virtually his entire career completing an impressive background in fighter operations. He has flown over 4,900 hrs. Almost completely in fighter aircraft, including the P-40, P-51, F-80, F-86, F-100, and finally the F-4-E at MacDill.

During the Korean conflict Col Beisner flew the F-51 mustang on 107 combat missions with the 35th Fighter Bomber group. He was a warded the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism while there.

Col. Beisner then alternated stateside and European assignments for several years. He was stationed at Canon AFB, N.M twice and spent 2 different tours at Hahn AB, Germany. Col. Beisner also served as commander of the 355th Day fighter Sqdn at Myrtle Beach AFB, SC.

Subsequently to his second assignment in Germany, he returned briefly to Canon AFB as director of Safety, 832nd Air Division, TAC.

Col Beisner was then selected to become the chief of Safety of the newly formed 836th A Div. at MacDill. Later Col Beisner was checked out in the new Phantom II F-4-C and received command of the 558th TFS of the 12th TFW from MacDill on a three-day flight to Cam Rank Bay, Vietnam, thus becoming the second F-4 Squdn to be assigned to support the Vietnam War.

While at Cam Rank Bay, Col Beisner flew 202 combat missions in the Phantom II, of which 35 were over North Vietnam. For his dedication in Combat, Col. Beisner has received the Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal with  thirteen Oak Leaf Clusters and the Bronze Star. He also hold the Combat Readiness Medal, and other Service Awards.

Upon completion of his Vietnam tour, Col. Beisner was assigned to Davis – Monthan AFB Ariz. In Jan 1967, where he assumed command of the 4456th Combat Crew Training Squdn which trained replacements F-4 crews for south east Asia. He then served as assistant director of operations at Davis-Monthan before his assignment as director of operations for the 15th TFW in June 1968.

Dec '84 - Dan & Nora

(Grandmother’s handwriting – Dec ’84)

DEAR Mable,

Mom sure enjoyed hearing from you. She really looks forward to the mail each day and has quie a stack of cards and letters to answer.

Mom is getting along pretty good down here but she misses Dad & her own home. She is getting a lot stronger now & when the weather permits we try to walk a mile or two every day. She enjoys her therapy and likes to practice at home. Her eyes still bother her a lot but the doctor thinks ta bigger glasses might help so we going to try that. Her speech is getting better but it is a long slow process.

I have told both her and Dad that when mom is able to go back home they will probably have to hire someone to live there with them to help cook and clean. Dad doesn’t like that but sometimes you have accept things that you can’t change. I told him that at least they would get to be together and in their own home.

Better stop now & get this mailed.

Love,
Dan & Nora

Letter From Bonnie & Del - March 8, 1974

March 8, 1974

My dear Mable,

So glad as always to hear from you & all the news. You mentioned you didn’t recognize people names in the Waldo news of the paper, well Martin Winder is our next door neighbor & his wife died last night. Her name is Gwen & she had a lump in her breast & had it removed 7 months ago but it spread all thru her rapidly. He (Martin Winder) says he is a relative of Archie’s & Albert’s. Seems like everyone around here are relatives of some kind or another. Del, I believe is getting a little better  since the doctor took him off of some much medication.  We got over income tax figured & are waiting for results & also waiting for prescriptions to come back with pharmacist signature so we ca send them in for refund.

March 9

We have our horse boarded out for a month to give our pasture a chancet come back & to give us a chance to get the fence rebuilt where she had it all crippled up & broken down this winter trying to get to the alfalfa. We are building it like this out of one of fours & then yesterday Del & Lyle painted it white. Sure looks nice.

(Drawing of fence was drawn here in the letter)

I just can’t wait until you come down to see our place & spend some time with us. Del has to lose some more weight so he has me on a diet too. I’ve enjoyed the country cream so much since I’ve been here but have given it up to please him because if its here he wants it, too. There are over 100 relatives expected at the funeral for Gwen Monday so already they have called everyone in Waldo 7 told them what food to bring. They called me last night & told me to bring a pie & Mrs. Hubbard to bring a potato salad – Well Mrs. Hubbard was visiting here with us & she would rather make a pie so we switched. I can make a delicious pie sometimes but once in a while they aren’t if I especially want it to be good but my potato salads are always good. I fixed hot bread yesterday & cinnamon rolls & took them over & today I’m fixing a lemon pie but won’t take it over unless the meringue stands up. Sometimes they sand 2” high & other times they just go flat & I don’t know what I do wrong.  I sure learned a lot about cooking down in Arkansas and helped cook for 600 screaming kids at the school house.

Last year when we first moved Gwen Winder told me she had just discovered a lump in her breat & it was extremely sore. Of course I immediately asked her if she could move it around and she felt & said “No.” I had several but I could move them & they just cut them out but the doctor said when you can’t move them they are more dangerous. Anyway, I insisted she go in & see about it. So she did the next day & had breast removed & then they started cobolt every day for 6 weeks & told her she was O.K. but she kept going down hill & I feel so badly because I told her to havei taken care of. It seems to me that once a cancer is cut on it goes twice as fast. Maybe if she would of just let it go she’ be alive today. Anyway I feel badly about it & can’t help it. How is Shirley & family. She was always so cute & I used to tease her so & am so sorry now but it was such fun to do at h time. Wilda’s Bahs wife is going back to Viet Nam for a couple of months to visit er people while he is in some kind of training. Well I better get that lemon pie made & see if it is going to be pretty & see if it is going to be pretty & if not I’ll have to think of something else to take over today. Love & write when you feel like it.

Bonnie & Del

unknown Poem

She will learn in time that proper young ladies do not laugh out loud...or kiss dogs,....or keep frogs in pickle jars in bedrooms...or watch ants scurry across the cracks in a summer sidewalk....

Today, who will begin to learn for the first time that all who smile at her are not her friends...That "the group" can be a demanding mistress....

And I'll stand on the porch and watch her start out on the long, long journey to becoming a women....

So World, I bequeath to you today one little girl in a crispy dress...with two blue eyes...

And a happy laugh that ripples all day long, and a batch of light blonde hair that bounces in the sunlight when she runs.

I trust you'll treat her well.

Unknown Date - George E. McElwen (?)

Due to the death of my father, George Bradley on ___ date – we were obligated to pay expenses of $663.12 to be divided among 3 persons. Each payed $221.04 was paid in full on June 16, 1964. On the 20th of July we were informed, by Social Security a check amounting to $120.00 was sent to your office, this was to be paid in the amount of $40.00 per account. Therefore a check should be forthcoming from you in the amount of $40.00 as our account had been paid in full before the daate you received the check from Soal Security.

I would appreciate your investigation of this matter.

I remain, Sincerely,

George E. McElwem

Note: The spelling of the last name in incorrect - it was hard to read the writing. This looks like a "practice" letter. There was no date with this note.

Dear Archie E, & All:

How are you all perking these days, hope that you are sitting on the top of the world, and beating Solitare once and awhile.  I think I have a record on this solitare as I kept track of my games while Inez was coming up here and I now have a record of about 4,000 games, and I can talk this language to you and give you all the dope and tell you how many cards you can get out each time etc.  When I get a little more experience I am going to twrite a book on my findings, or am I. I have your letter before me and note what you said about the cold weather in the far north, or the Artic Circle, boy it did get a little frosty up here for about 30 days hand run, in fact it was so damn cold that you had to keep your 100 proof bottle in the sun or it would freeze up on you. You know it broke a few records here in Anchorage, for the longest cold spell but think it only got down to about 44 below, but over at Skag, and that is back towards you it broke the records for cold being registered in the U.S.A and her possessions, but t that it only got down to 83.3% Below zero. When you took a leak so they say you had to back away from the Icicles, and when you would spit, it would fly out and pop and never hit the ground, but that don’t mean anything to us old sourdoughs, just another cold snap.

As far as Seattle and I am concerned they can bury it any time in fact I might come back some time and help you with your job it would be a pleasure. How are you and the Jews making out down there. Up here the people feel very friendly towards Seattle, yes, just like one of those Brown Bears and a moose coming together, how they do love each other. I have not been hung yet, as I was not a sourdough, but have my Moose and what have you all staked out for next fall and I am going to get him. I do not believe there is any place in the World today that uiversaly hates another town like Alaska hates Seattle and that is no Joke. Seems they have done all that was in their power  and more to, I mean Seattle, to handicap this new country from trying to get along. We have an air line now direct to Minneapolis and St. Paul, and we Alskan’s re going to try and route most of our trade from Inland. When you have those strikes down there and every body was needing a lot of supplies badly, when they finallyid come, Seattle Charged Dock storage on the supplies, and who paid that, the Anchorage Merchants, They sure pulled some of the lowest tricks I ever heard of I could go on and on telling you about your Shister Jews in Seattle and Alaska, after a person has been up here awhile he hates to think of getting off an aeroplane or ship there, I personally would rather land at Everett, and walk around Seattle to get into gods country, anyplace but Seattle. Pardon Me Arch you are a resident of SEATTLE, but I was just mentioning these things in passing and hope you do not take any offense at what I have said, in fact I have just hit a couple of high spots.

Next Monday is the stating of the Fur Rondevu, here in Anchorage and Inez and I are figuring on helping them make the fur fly.  It is quiet an affair, everybody has to wear whiskers, they have Dog Races skieing and about everything you can think of in the line of Northern Sports. The days are getting longer now and the sun is shining and it really is nice out, however we had sunshine through all this cold weather we had, you know it is dry cold and does not harm you, like your mist and fog and rain, I’ve got to pour it on a little.

Notice your P.S. about the Gillet Deal, look Sharp, Feel sharp, Be Sharp, that does not mean anything in my young life, for believe it or I am enclosing herewith one Photgraph taken in our room to prove my Statements henchforth and so on. This was taken about 20 days ago, and you should see the fur that I have accumulated by now. Don’t tell Gillette about this or he might take away my razor.
Well Arch it is about time to take off for the tall uncut and I have to cut this short.
Best of regards and luck to you all, and hope by now you have seen the light.
As Ever, yours as B/4, 100 Proof Bottled in Bond.

Jere S. Boggs, Post Engineers,
APO 942, %P.M. Seattle, Wash.

P.S. Say what happended I dropped alst all I won on the ROSEBALL Game, but couldn’t get all my money up on U.C.L.A. and how Lucky I was There. Something happened there, UCLA Had a better team than that, However I always did think Sou. Calif had the best Pacific Ball racket, I am thinking the N.W. Division win, will end them up. anyway I would not bet they’d beat the California team, but I do not know anything about any of them, but that is just a hunch of mine we will see how they come out.

Thanks for the clipping on your Dual Murder. Inez & June Jervett sure got a kick out of them. Kick is not a good word there but you know what I mean. Whats your Price now adays on 100 Prood Old Crow Bottled in Bond 1/5

Letter from Emma Webb

Note: Postmark on envelope is dated Jan 15, 1985 – but Emma dated the letter 1965

Jan 10 – 65

Dear Mable

I haven’t forgotten you, but I have had a bout with the flu and just can seem to snap o of it. Don’t feel so bad, but don’t have any pep. Don’t suppose its old age do you? I’m 85.

We had a real blizzard yesterday Blowing & drifting. I had 18” & 21” drifts in my yard. 17” everywhere. I cleaned a walk way around the house to our drive-way. I’d work awhile then come in and rest awhile. I really enjoy being out and I sure work up an apetite that I can stand as I don’t weigh 100#

Had all the family here Christmas eve, 25 of us. We had supper then our gift exchange and as usual Santa was to good to me. Received a nice robe and gown a vacuum cleaner (& I needed it) cash, 3 bottles of wine, 4 boxes of chocolates home made candy, carmel corn, fruit, 2 jars of home canned beef and all kinds of groceries. I had the dishes done and table back to its right size by 11:30. I don’t let the girls help me clean up as I work off some steam then I can go to bed & sleep. Pat, Normas wife had to work Christmas Day so Norman was cooking their turkey – I had ham for our meat.

Larry is busy, he has cattle, hogs, and 4 horses and prices aren’t good on any of them. He is also helping our neighbor ut up Solar Panels. Have put up 11 so far and also insulated the Catholic Church in Lincoln so he has had to get up early, do his chores and go to work at 8:30 so it keeps him moving. He likes it and it brings him in some cash and that helps.

Don has 4 children Donna married and both are Truckers, Steven & his wife live in Oklahoma, Steven works in oil field. Repair the machinery, they have a little girl, she goes to to-day school Chuck works on a farm, lives in his trailer house in Salina. Sara is a waitress lives at Kanarado, Kansas. Don’s 2nd wife has 3 children, boy out of High School, oldest girl a Senior this year and the other girl in grade school.  Don is working in Salina, servicing these big truckers, Charlene his wife is a waitress in Salina both make good wages.

Norman is still with Kansas Power & Light Salina. They live on their farm south of escott. Pat is assistant manager of a Nickerson’s Farm Restaurant.

David married lives in Topeka just finishing college. Plans to be a coach. Charlotte married lives in Manhattan. Married to an army man they have a little boy & girl.

Mark & Gregory live in Manhattan  going to Kansas State College and John will be a Senior in High School next year. So our family is getting to be grown up.

I’ve been crocheting, have made an afghan for each of the boys, grandchildren & great grand children. A few others & the M. E. Aid for their Bazaar in all 21. Have 2 more started. I do that evenings. I have to keep busy.

Do you live alone? I usually have chores to do, but I don’t buy any calves this year as I didn’t think I could take care of them and Larry has plenty to do without that.

Well I guess I better sign off and get my dishes done and it will be bed time.

Hope you are doing O.K. and that you had a nice Christmas and that the New Years will be good to you.

Love Emma

Nov 16 1981 - H Turn

I realized it had been a month since I posted any letters - so I am posting as many as I can today. I have added some that I had already copied. I would love to post the photo of the letters, but I am unable to scan and post on the blog. I will see about taking photos of the letters so you can see what I'm having to go through on handwriting. I hope you are getting something from these letters, as I know I am.

Dear Mable,

Thank you for those kind words about the book. I met a lot of great people while gathering all of the data. So I really reaped the most benefit.

Thank you for sending order for Maurice, and please thank him for ordering, for me. Orders are coming in now that more people have heard about the book or have seen one. But it was the ones like you who ordered “sight unseen” who made the book possible.

There were 300 oks printed and I mailed out a little over 200 the first mailing. I think it is possible that I may run out of books. Of course I would hate that, you know how that goes. But I could print more, but would need at least 150 standing orders before the printer would mess with it.

What rattles me is, everyone writes such nice letters and no one tells me about the errors! I’m sure they’re just being kind. People call by phone all the time – Of course that is exciting, too. (And people wonder why anyon would mess with doing something like this. ha They should just try it and see how mnay nice people they have in their “family.”)

I mailed the book to Maurice today as I had to go to P.O. and mail other orders that came in today. Since it takes so long for BOOKRATE mail to get to where it’s going, I like to get them right on out.

I really missed out on a large group of people by not doing the contacting for material myself. I’m speaking of the Mathesons. But if Wilda had not gathered that data, we would be still waiting for a book while I completed that part. She’s really a super person to have working on ones side in doing something.

I thought maybe the Rooks book would put a damper on this one because so many people are also in that Rooks book. But doesn’t seem to bother a thing. And I am glad that Rooks book did finally get delivered. I know it was in the “making” fr an awfully long time even after going to the printer. Wilda put in a lot of time, and Raymond, gathering stories for that book.

I didn’t realize how mear Thanksgiving is until our Daughter and fam. said they’d come for Thanksgiving and I looked at the calendar. Ha

Both guest rooms are piled high with boxes of books, mailing cartons and all the files etc that accumulated while “doing” the book. I just moed everything out of the den when I took the book to the publisher last April and haven’t gone through everything and thrown out the million pieces of paper. Now I’ll need to get going and clear away the “mess.” I can remember how thrilled I was when each “piece of paper” was received in the mail in the form of data for the book. ha

I had no room to save the letters but kept only pages with data. The trash man will think I’m fixing to move when he sees Friday’s pick up. ha

I think it will be nice for a change to be able to see the floor and top of furniture. Be like a new house. ha And Wayne tolerated the the whole thing – 3 years of it.

You wrote a very interesting letter. I wish the record of dates and places you had lived had gotten into the book. You know how it is when someone in years to come will wonder about these people like we wondered about the “ancestors” and had to find out about some of them in researching old courthouse records. ha
And we will be ancestors someday. ha

I must stop rattling and get started on this house. I don’t really know where to start.

Hope you have a nice holiday Season and a really great 1982.

I’ll probably never know it’s come and gone as I usually can’t keep up with the way time flies these days. But enjoy hearing from you.

Love, Helen

Letter from Rosa Worthy

Someone said it would be more fun if they saw the letters in their original handwriting. So, I am going to try and do that. I have a few letters that I copied and will post now. I will see how the original writings go and how much time it will take me to scan each one. It's worth a try.

I'm going to go ahead and post the others, and after that see how the scanning goes.

September 1959 - Delpha

Mrs. Everett Dawe

Dear Friends:

How is Mable & Archie? By now! Hope you are both well & all your family.

This leaves us pretty well. I’m wondering if Ill ever get over your Daddy’s death, then our dear old darling Mother death so soon afterward.

I suppose you read it. I think I heard you say at Mothers that dy you took the Natoma Paper. Arent I right?
Ive been intending to scribble you a letter as that is all I do. Every sense I came home. Viola gave me your address. As we were coming home on the train but dear Iv had allergy everysense I gotten home or in a weeks times.

Doctor thought I got it out in Washington, as everything was green out there you know. Thought I came in contact with poision ivy or oak. I know weve spent over a hundred dollars & still it comes back so think my trip was a ver expenses one. don’t you?

Are you still working at the same jobs. Everett still building janitor & plumbing & Jack of all trades I think. They have him doing everything even killing lots in the Osborne Court house, ha. 59 of them in the attic (“c” with two dots under)

How is Harold heard he wasn’t so well? Roxie said when Jim phoned him of Mothers death he said his back was bothering him again. That he was out of a job.

It cost us a plenty to, to bring Mother back and one stood his share. There was just $200 left from Mother’s & your Dads saving out of $1100 Mother said! They had sad up for there burial. Mother thought they had some in the bank. But Harold said no money there.

Mabel, were the pictures any good of Mother, and us kids Ive thought of you how nice you were to take a picture of us. But know mine would spook them all.

Mother went very quick Roxie said she had ate a good breakfast, said! she had to go to the bathroom Roxie watched her. Because her eye sight was pretty gone Thought she was going to make it, as she had been but Roxie picked up a anyone the floor took it to the kitchen door to shake it, heard Mother fall run to her and asked Mom! What happened. She said Oh I feel Roxie picked her up. She said Oh I can get up. Not to lift on her as doctor didn’t want Roxie, or me either to lift heavy sense  had our hysteroctomys but helped her in a big arm chair. She bumped her head, she forgotten Roxie getting her some Mentholatum she thought they were out. And said get me some butter. Roxie said Mom. I got something better than that went & got it Mother helped her put it on her head. Then Roxie took it back to the medience cabinet in the bathroom. When she came back Mother was slumped in her chair. She was gone. Was so glad Roxie was able to bring her back to lay beside Daddy. I think that is where she shood of been don’t you? As Mother was the Mother of our Daddy’s children, not yours. Well dear you may think your getting the Natoma paper. Ha. Mabel were you borned in 1909 as that is what Harold said. But pity sake you must of started to school when you were four, if you are only 50 of course I flunked one year had tonsillitis to much that year. Then always sick. If I had them and adenoids out I could o learnt easier I realize now. But to late now. Where is Shirley now? And what was her other baby. I’ve thought her little boy a darling. I’ve often wondered. Lowell is in Saipan, Japan.  Went over again third time in July the 28th. Majorie his wife is planning on going over soon. Has all her shots for overseas.

Frank Matheson Albert Schloh Lawrence Nelson. Bill Hogan Lloyd Crawford. Were three of Mothers pall bearers. One of our cousins were another on Daddies side of the house. Write dear. Sooner than I didI’d love to hear from you. Love Delphe & Everett

(On side of letter: Aunt Mary Wineland was fine day of the funeral haven’t seen her sense.)

NOTE: I believe Delphe is a step sister to Mabel.I will need to double check that in my genealogy.

Dear Brother-

Will write u on some of our surprise gift stationery - one of our Tenants is a printer - he and his wife have had an apt with us for over 4 yrs - We decided to give them $15.00 for Christmas as they've been such good tenants, but were surprised to get gift from them.
Have that of U so much but we've moved again since Xmas & find much to keep us busy - U didn't have to wait on me - even tho I owed U a letter - Have had above seasonal weather had a little snow storm last week. but a chinook wind took all of it Sunday. This is a grand day - Bob is up in foot hills helping a friend do some hiring - Did U watch Inangceration (?) on T.V.? Oh do U have T.V. there & "Ikes" prayer was an unusual procedure but very nice I thought - Heres wishing him the best of every thing in all he does - - after having rented our little house down by River for nearly 2 1/2 yrs to a couple, they moved recently - find there plenty of scrubbing & redecorating to do - If we had that to do often I'd be ready to try and make a living same other way - Our friends who rented Meadow Lerk Lodge for nearly 4 months while building, left it shining, when they moved out Jan 1" Most of our Tenants keep things up - but when a tenant has lovely hands & Long finger Nails are not looking for there to leave things "spic & span" - I've  hard y nails down, getting things clean! Seems nearly like a dream to think Wm & rest here here for few hours - didn't get to visit with Wm - for a month before Christmas I was so busy sending cards - wrote letters with most of them - He tried to get apt in order for Holidays but B was working away fence have part of him - had 5 friends here Christmas day - Ruth Anderson was up from Denver as has another friend - Ruth staid till Saturday - neglected waiting Joe for 3 weeks - he began to think there was some thing wrong - are sure sorry about Stellas ailment - hope she gets letter soon - Yes I do understand how U might feel about things - & its really strange to me that I can feel the way I do - would never have that I would - perhaps its a bond between twins that makes me feel or - would want it that way - think U feel the way I did when Mother left - where others joked about Father finding some one else it always hurt. for no one could ever have taken M's place with me, nor could I have had anyone come in to my home, tho I recognized F's right to have married again - Seemed odd about Christmas time I heard some one on Breakfast Club Program who was from Lastant ILL - In Father's letters to Mother just before they were married, he wanted her to go to Lastant & he'd meet her there the day they were to be married - I'd never heard them speak of the place - Will enclose letter F. wrote M. at that time - Notice in Grand Mother M's letter what the 15 pens sold for - $4.20 - only 28c a piece!
Guess this pen is about shot - saw Dale last Sat - says h's got to go to work - he's spent $10,000.00 on his leg - Mayo's told him that he got a raw deal from these other Drs - but like all Drs - they wouldn't help him convict any one for Mal practice - Write - Love Martha

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

Dear Mabel & Archie: Just thought you'd like to see our new church. so am using this to send greetings. We spent Tue with Jo and Mary I baked an angel food cake for her & took a chicken. We took Jo downtown for dinner and had supper ready when Bill brought Mary home from work. They are about as usual. Jo did say that oh had hoped for a little from you folks and Howards But neither had come. So I said maybe they would the next day. Do hope you can have your family with you or be with them for the holidays. Velma wrote what a nice little boy Shirley has.
Patricia has 3 and Rita 2 so we have quite a family now when we are all together. Patricicas babe will be 2 yrs old Dec 26. she is Anita Ruth but we call her Nita. Rita has mat who was 3 Aug 30 and Lori who was 1 Sept 4 Patricia s boys will be february 5 and January 4 on Mch 15. The 3 little boys have quite a bit of rivalry with them gradad But oh how we enjoy all of them. Hope you folks are well as usual But these years are slipping up on all of us. Sometimes I feel like 40 again, and again mor like 80 Ha!
Please extend our greetings to Shirley and family too.
Bill & Jo keep busy. He didn't sell his hiefer calves. So they have 60 other of them. That or getting grain twice a day. He said the past few years the folks that had fed this calves were making more than the fellow that raised them. So he's trying it. Will put out the ones he wants to keep in the spring and may sell the balance of them.
Just read on one paper that Don & Leona had bought 40 head of registered Angus cows and a couple of bulls. He's been handling back cattle for several years. i still kike the Herefords for mine and I know Bill does Bill said he never had better calves than this year. Best ever to you and yours. Bill & Rita
