LETTERS FROM THE PAST

This blog is to honor those who have come before us. These are family letters that I have had for years and wanted to be able to share them with family. It's an interesting way of knowing how life was in the past.

Myron F Taylor with 3 of his buddies in 1952. Over the last 20 years I've been working on our family letters. Letters that have been passed down. Including letters from my parents to my great-grandmother. Every letter was saved by my great grandmother and grandmother. I hope someday to either print them or give them to a museum. I am copying the letters–not being able to photocopy all of them. Each letter is in script. I know today very few can read them. I hope you enjoy them.

Flowers For Orville

Minnie Reeder and Orville were very close. As most mother and "youngest" child are. She made sure he had flowers on his grave most every year.

Dec 7, 1969 - Ted Allen to Minnie Reeder

Dec 7, 1969

Dear Aunt Minnie:

I myself had been wondering if you are O.K. so I was especially pleased to hear from you. Seems like it has been two years since. But I could be mistaken, I’ve been so busy night & day. And when I get through a summer season I’m usually groggy. My sisters Frances and Lydia both were asking me if I had heard from you. Said they hadn’t heard in some time. And that was last week they had asked. They know I usually get a card from you at Xmas.

I was down at Oakley Kans, to be with Frances & all the families at Thanksgiving, but missed the dinner as I had a little cold, and didn’t want to give it to everyone. The dinner was at Frances’ house for 5 families, first in a few years. So, Thurs. morning (the 25th) I called her to say I wouldn’t be down until evening or later in the week. Then, went back to bed. When I awoke at 10 am I felt pretty good, so I ate breakfast and watched the football game on TV. Then, as I was already loaded, I pumped in the car and drove yet to Aokley. I got in on the leavings from dinner and was quite happy. I called Lydia in Kans. City while in Oakley. Spent four busy days visiting the families & nieces & nephews One half day was for hunting pheasants, and seeing an old friend on a farm a half hour. Saw others at odd times.

One day was spent (or rather ½ day) I took Frances & Will Stevenson with me for the afternoon to Natoma, etc. I drove by Grandparent’s old town house, and no longer is it a fine place. Some one had made a plain shed like structure out of it for a house. Greatly reduced in size, etc.

I have a good picture of it here, I mean the old house.

I drove around town, took a picture of the old hotel made out of chalk rock stone Still there. But maine street is now a on-way street, was I surprised. I drove the wrong way, just looking around, until it was too late.

A fellow told me the old threshing separator that used to sit down in the hole on the main corner, finally was taken out recently.

We drove out to se the rock house of Grand parents, on the homestead. It still stands, but the inside is deterrating of the wood  work, finally. Frances said that only 2 or 3 years ago, it was in better shape. But one stone fell out of the place alone the window. It appears as tho it will fall down in the near future, now that it is started.

The place is owned by a Witchita man, he leased it for grazing to a nearby farmer. Also is leased out for oil later.

When we came over the hill to it, I was thrilled to see it stand out along the priairie on the knob. Brought back memories. About all is left is the house & part of another rock shed, no sign much of the old dug-out; slight remains of the old shed out north.

I wish Itcould have been persevered It is a reminder of a great era of which they were a part. This was the first time I had been there since I was living west of Natoma until I was 5 or 6 years old.

But I had been at Natoma, Once, when my younger brother & I went there to stay a winter & go to school while mom was taking care of Grandmother when she was sick. Grandfather was there too.

Then dad, mother, and I was there 3 or 4 days after we got through shucking corn at Moreland. Spent 2 days putting up hay near Natoma, then back home to Boulder.

Another time I went through on my last an exhibitions We stopped to give one in Natoma (Oakley, too).

But never to see the homestead until last week.

I have a couple pictures, here, of Mable’s daughter Shirley & husband that mom left, taken in 1954. My brother Ira in Calif. Did have a son & family living in Japan recently on his 2nd Army stay there. Was there since I saw him in 1963. I don’t know if he is still there.

Oh by the way we went down to the farm to see Glenn Kaster at Natoma.

I suppose you an Mable heard about Nathan passing a way in 1968.

Going to L.A. Calif. Next July to the horseshoe tourney. Will try to see Bill True. I’ve won some tournaments in the Rockies lately.

I promised Mable that I would have a copy made of a picture of Grandma True. I’ve been awful busy, also there fine camera shop here who used do a great job sold out. Now they send work to Calif. I’m afraid to trust such a picture until I know people like that. So many places now hire students out cheap wages to do the work. Fellows who are learning, and half the time do a bad job. I’ve had to start looking around for a place to get pictures developed elsewhere. I’ve paid for some bad pictures,

Love, Ted (over)

PS I completely overworked in 1967, near exhaustion after 9 months of 20 hr a day.

In 1968 in May I got bit by a wood tick with the Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and that is something I hope never to get again. Took a year to get over it. This year, I spent only 4 months of 20 hours a day during summer.

Ted Allen is well know for winning Horseshoe Tournaments in the 1960's. He was top of his class.

Dear Grandma,

Just thought I’d drop a line to let you know I’m still alive and kicking. Don’t mind if the lines get a little crooked, I’m not used to writing on paper without lines. I guess you could tell that. Enough of this gab, its not very interesting.

Mother is down in Wall Walla with Dad and Les & I are staying at Jeannette’s. She took Ken. You knew Dad was working at Walla Walla, didn’t you. They just drove in. Mother says she doesn’t like it down there & she hopes Dad comes back up here. Golly, I can’t keep up with them. Do you think you could. It’s awfully hard.

We’re having our spring vacation now. I visited Central school last Tue. I used to go there. I had a lot of fun. I visited my boyfriend’s (Dan Darden) room in the morning and in the afternoon I went in my girlfriend’s room.

Well I’d better sign off for now. Mom & Dad send their love,

All my love,

Naomie Jean

PS If you see Virginia tell her I’m expecting a letter. I wrote to her a long time ago. Gene too.

(back of letter)

Jay is fine – Marian is sick. All the rest are fine.
Hope to hear from you soon –
Did you get the money?
Had rain two days now –
Love Dorothy

July 31, 1978 - Delmer Stuart

July 31, 1978

Dear Aunt Mabel

I hope that things may begin to improve again now that some fo the sorrow has come to pass, butin its passing I know that all persons who have ever had any contact with Grandmother Reeder, has made the gain of a lasting love that shall not end, ever, even though the body is covered and gone, the spirite shall always be.

Aunt Mabel, I hope that I’m not considered out of place by asking for anything, but it may be that there was a small album of stamps, toys, ect, that I had when I was home in LaGrande. Or if I could haveany letters written to Grandmother in the years past.

The letters I would keep for myself, the toys and stamps to be passed on to my children, they may also be some book and photos.

Anything that you might see a way to send, I would be grateful.

I also hope that one day I might be able to visit all of you. In the mean time, Love Always, Delmer Stuart

NOTE: Delmer has since passed, so felt I could post this.

I tried walking down town, must of walked half way,, & got so tired took a cab the rest of the way, had some nice stores there, & lovely things, if one had the money to buy them. it would of been nice to tools the bus & look aroun, but chat costs quite a bit to so I just went back to the depo & stayed there, & rested. lots of water in Idaho, but didn't bother the train any, we came right along left Pocottella at 12.15 A.M. got in La Grande at 1035 AM. not to bad, it wasent crowded, so I could lay down & rest, Azel was feeling fine, walked around out side & went church to. Hi went for a check up monday. his heart bea still 36. they say it should be 72. He takes oxygen when He lays now sure helps. He has been peacing a pillow top out of old neck ties, gives Him something to do. its hard to be quite, the Dr told Lois to let Him do anything He wanted to do, not argue with Him for that would up set Him more than, trying to work, He likes to ride in the car. I wrote off what He had in the Bible. & I think its the same as I have only I believe I have more than Hi does. yesterday was Jays Birthday, the neighbors came in with cake & jello. then in the evening we went over to Juniors for cake & ice cream, so He really had cake. we still have some cake & ice cream Margie called in the evening, to wish Him Happy Birthday, & is still going to send a cake. 7 present & got Him 3 pair of sock. & some screen drivers in a little container, Juniour & Della, gave Him a hat, so its not so back, Juniour & Della are going to Portland Sunday, they are taking Janice to a clinic, as she has a crooked foot, & see what they say, they have had Her shoe built up & still dosent correct, they want me to go with them, so guess I will, I wish we would t our checks tomorrow, ide love to call you there, but don't know if I can or not, if our check dosent come, unless I call collect to you, then send you the money when I get home, ill try to get those reckords written off, if I ever stay home long enough. the weather here is ovely now, sure hope it stays so for a while. zOh yes, we got our xmas gift, from Harolds, both room scales, we dident have any, so sure will come in very nice, mabey I can watch my weight, Ha. Sunday June 21, 1953

Dear Shirley, Archie & Mable –

I guess it has been quite a while since I last wrote. The time goes by faster than you think but we have been busy and lots to do now. Harvest is started all around us but will be a few days before ours will be ripe enough to cut. We plan to start cutting our 2nd cutting of Alfalfa in the morning. It is very dry and hot. 111 high one day & lots of 105-108 The wheat won’t amount to much this year. Dry last fall very little snow during the winter and I guess about the driest spring we ever had. Our ponds are all dry and of course lost all our fish. The week is just running and that is all. Early spring I had good fishing at the river but no good now just a thin sheet of water going over the dam at Alton. I am sending a picture taken of the kids last fall don’t know if I sent you one like this or not. Don’t have any new ones should take more pictures. I sure would love to have been out there for your graduation & see you folks but it seems that we don’t have any slack time any more. Cattle make a lot of extra work all winter & it is go all the time during the summer. If we had known a year ago what we know now we could have sold all the cattle & feed and gone on a vacation & been way ahead.  We were at the sale last Wed. & they sold a good little red cow for %52. Just about the same price a baby calf brought this early spring. We knew this would happen have been expecting it for a long time but the thing that hurts we won’t ha feed for next winter unless it rains right away.
I have thought of it several times but never got around to get you a graduation gift. I believe you can do a better job of buying what you want than I can so will enclose a little present.

Uncle Art is very low just a matter of days now. He hasn’t taken any food or water for several days.
Aunt Laura was out to Lucille’s & we were down for dinner today. All our folk are fine. Lucille is expecting again so maybe they will tae some new pictures. The boys have gone fishing with me several times this spring & Bill caught a 17 in blue cat so he thinks he is quite a fisherman Well it is after 11 so will close for now but if I was there I could think of a lot to talk about. Hope this finds you all well.
Love Jr.

(Half a piece of paper added to the letter)
We got word this morning Uncle Art passed away during the night lasts night.
I almost forgot to thank you for the very nice picture I received. You sure wouldn’t ha to look twice to tell it is Shirley I thought it was a very good picture of you. When you get that “feller” hooked you can come to Kansas & see us> we will put him to work & see if he is any good.

I am gaming some. we have compnay evory day. so the house here to be clean as I can keep it we have linoleum in the frount room kitchen & one bed room up starts. & a exminster rug in the other up stairs bed room

yes Margie is a poor hadn to write a letter. for her mind isnent centered on letter writing.

yes margie & I went over to Harolds. the Sat before xmas. Came home the next Sat. they had evorything nice. & evory thing good to eat.

but Harold was feeling so bad. he most of the time I was there. such a cold a while. we were afraid he would have pemonia. he missed work one night.
he realy shouldent of brung me home I guess. for I had a card from him this week saying he had been in bed ever sence he went home. 8 days & would he the 2 more days anyway. he threw his hip out of place once. & it some times. slips out now. so & amazen the Dr. put him to bed. till it got better.

Orville has the toncilatis today. missed school. they is around 4 hundred pupils in their school just grade pupils. I can stand at the kitchen window & watch them march out. their now even allowed to play on the lawn on this side of the school house. just on the side walk. they even burn wood at the school house.

I was there when Harold got your package. & they were sure pleased. Harlin was proud of his duck, had lots of fun with it, hes sure a case. & has sure grown. he finaly called me Granma. & would hug & kiss me to. I had a nice visit Forest weighs 2 hundred lbs now.

yes they made real good on their traping & I am glad to heer some one can make money

well Mable will try & finish my letter this morning.

This is Minnie True Matheson Reeder with her second husband Jay Reeder. Thought you would like to see names with faces.

Another photo, later in life. The first one is believed to have been a wedding photo. This is the grandparents I remember.

This is Mable and Archie Wineland. She was always a true lady. Never talked bad about anyone and if she had family she was upset with and did not talk about or to, they were "dead" in her eyes. Her sister didn't exist until I met her when Minnie passed away. Margie became her sister again when I was 19 years old. Before that, Mable didn't have a sister. I believed her till I looked Margie in the eye and asked who she was, when she told me she was grandmother's sister, I turned to grandmother and said, "you told me you didn't have a sister." She replied, "oh, well, I do."
