LETTERS FROM THE PAST

This blog is to honor those who have come before us. These are family letters that I have had for years and wanted to be able to share them with family. It's an interesting way of knowing how life was in the past.

Myron F Taylor with 3 of his buddies in 1952. Over the last 40 years I've been working on our family letters. Letters that have been passed down. Including letters from my parents to my great-grandmother. Every letter was saved by my great grandmother and grandmother. I hope someday to either print them or give them to a museum. I am copying the letters–not being able to photocopy all of them. Each letter is in script. I know today very few can read them. I hope you enjoy them.

Christmas 1962 - Irvin & Marion Wineland

 Dear Archie and Mable:

Another Xmas. Have mailed you a package, another carving Irvin made. Irvin says it’s an old Hebrew or an Arab. The base is Chinese Umbrella tree and the figure is Menzaneta burl root. Am enclosing a page from our local newspaper, with a writeup and on the other page the Hardware Store is advertising Irvings carvings.

Hope you are enjoying your house and the nice warm furnace in the colder weather. Days, one can go out with just a sweater or sometimes don’t need that but towards night it starts to get cold. Have our fireplace going good at night and morning.

Picked some avocados already but holding the rest of the crop until January or February as they are not ready. The some up at the top of the tree are big.

Don’t really know who owes who a letter but Irvin says “Shy doesn’t that darn Archie write.” Hope Archie is keeping out of the rain with his Hearing Aid and keeping it in good condition. We haven’t had any rain since last May tho they keep saying it might rain. Can’t say we miss it and it sure would be good for Archie’s hearing Aid.

We don’t have Shirley’s address. If you send it in time we will write her and anyway can send her a New Year note.

Rec’d letter and card from Alice – wonder how Aunt Bess is? Wrote to Uncle George, Marvin, etc. I’ll bet it’s darn cold back there.

I intended on going down to So Mexico some time in Jan – I want some good carving wood I can get Teak Rosewood, Brazilwood ebony et at 1/10 the price I would have to pay here – but they just don’t have any either in San Diego or Los Angeles – too expensive and not enough call for them to handle any. I have my carvings in camp Pendleton which has 8 stores. So hope to work up a good deal with them, I took 14 over to show the buyer and they grabbed all of them.

Some of our avocado trees are showing some bloom for next years crop, already, we have only 25 trees but one can get them to produce 20 to 40 boxes of fruit if you fertilize and water regular, so we hope to have adamant crop next year.

Was out on the Colorado desert a few weeks ago for Ironwood and Palo Verle a greenish barked wood, got some nice prices. Is old one price, without doing any carving on it at all for $15. And have orders for more – so want to go again – I find fabulous barel (sp?) on the Ironwood.

Our cats (5) are all well and full of H-l. One little fellow 4 mo & 1 – 8 mo with our three older ones.

 Now write –

 Happy Hollidays

 Marion & Irv-
