LETTERS FROM THE PAST

This blog is to honor those who have come before us. These are family letters that I have had for years and wanted to be able to share them with family. It's an interesting way of knowing how life was in the past.

Myron F Taylor with 3 of his buddies in 1952. Over the last 20 years I've been working on our family letters. Letters that have been passed down. Including letters from my parents to my great-grandmother. Every letter was saved by my great grandmother and grandmother. I hope someday to either print them or give them to a museum. I am copying the letters–not being able to photocopy all of them. Each letter is in script. I know today very few can read them. I hope you enjoy them.

Unknown Date - Archie to Mable

No postmark or date on this letter – same blue paper as he used in 1923.

Dear Mable –

I am sorry that I couldn’t get around any quicker. Say Kid get Web or Nattie to bring you over tomorrow morning (Sat). I am sending for some Hamburger by Bob. I also wrote to grandfather about the money. Say Kid lets go back over to town Sat nite and then get that straightened up and order our furniture and come back Monday. We want to try and coax Bob to go to Russell after Paint Monday. I want to get a matress and the stuff for a (petition) Monday.

Listen Kid send your Friend or Bring it. The goose, but leave your clothes and other stuff till Monday. Bring all my good clothes and yours also one of your old dresses tomorrow. Make Web or Nettie or someone bring you as I will be most awfully busy tomorrow. I told Mrs. Bowlby to bake me a cake and have it ready sometime Sat and she said all right she looked and I’ll bet she wondered what I wanted it for.

As Ever Archie

This could have been when Mable and Archie eloped. They took off and got married without anyone knowing about it. He had left her a message by the tree they would meet at, in Kansas. I don't know more than that about the elopement. Grandmother didn't talk much about it, other than she met him up on a hill and they planned the escape.

Sun Eve 5.30

Dearest Mable –

I received your two letters and was most awfully glad to get them, and glad to know that you got there all right. I sure hope you enjoy yourself. I stayed over today and have been busy all day. Snow and I went up to Walker just after dinner. Gene’s folks came over for dinner but Babe wasn’t along. R.C. B. was over the other day to see me. He wanted my little Bay horse to ride in the Pony Express race next Sat and also that he wanted me to go along. We get from Russell to Ellis. Will explain it to you when I get to see you.

I sure was busy this week. About every night I dreamed of Warrena. Last nite I thought I was working in some town and the kid came along and said she was lost and of course I had to look after her. We won’t have so awfull much more threshing. We are about 5 miles North of Walker now.  Kid you will just have to look over my poor writing for the simple reason that I have a pencil that is only one inch long and I am laying in bed with my paper on a little block of wood about 4 by 10 inches so look out for some epiatule. (? Was underlined)   Jim and all the rest went home last nite and it seems lonesome  around here when I am not working. Now it doesn’t seem that way than as I consider writing work. Well Kid I am now down to the shack and it 6.30 and I am giving to Walker with Phil after supper. I have been a pretty good Boy lately and I will try to be you know I have a pretty bad failing but. But, I am out say no more. Jim and I are going to have a fishing party when we get done and we will pick our crowd and we will enjoy ourselves to the utmost capacity. Tell you when I see you Kid.

Well Kid be good and try and enjoy yourself for once

Well supper’s ready so By By

As ever

June 30, 1947 - Archie to Mable

Sun June 30 –

Dearest Mom and Shirley Ann,

Hows Daddy’s pals anyway. I’m still on top, eating like a horse and feeling o.k. It was so wet the last wk that we didn’t do any field work. Worked on combine 2 days and Rawl went al over and now has about all the repairs he needs. He bought a new tractor yesterday. Some make as the old one, but its sure a dandy. He has put a lot of new stuff on combine so it should run like new. The wheat is turning more everyday, so if the weather stays dry and sunshiny it won’t be long before hervest. The ground is so wet that there are water standing in the low spots in the Plowed fields.

I hope the weather stays dry so we can get to working and keep at it till we get done as time goes too slow for me when I’m laying around. It wouldn’t be so bad if you two were here You know I get lonesome for you two.

Hope you enjoyed your vacation did you stop at Harold & Jennies? Is Shirley there with you or is she in La Grande? Hope she’s with you. How was the wedding? Tell Valorie that was a dirty trick for her to do, to get married when I was gone.

After we get the work done here. I intend to go down to Osb Co and visit for a while, Roll tells me that two of the boys who are running a Body and Fender ship in Hoxie, went to a school in KC. I want to talk to them and find out all about it. How much it costs, How long it takes and all. If I decide to take it up, I’ll go there before I come back to Seattle. Then I may stop off in Utah for a few days before I come back. It might be I could get school over with by the time hunting season starts Any way those two should know about it.

I wrote Irvin a while back also Albert, and I got a Sympathy card to send Kit. Did you find out any more from Pearl about Ell’s death. I suppose he’s better off if he couldn’t stop drinking. John Pratt will be just like him.

We don’t get any news of Natoma nor any from the N. West. They only take a topeka paper and it’s a day or two late getting here.

Hows every one in the project? Are there many striking there over Congress passing the Labor Bill? I suppose the machinist are hollering their heads off. Are there many calls for men in the papers? Did Martin quit? Are you getting many eggs now?

Today is real cool and clowdy. I suppose we will get another rain before its over.

Keep your eyes on the look out for Body & Fender men in the papers. It looks like a good trade to be in. Don’t you think? How are Floyds making it and what did Forest say about work there. I’ve kept my eyes out for clothes for you an Shirley Ann, but they are too high here.

May be I can find something in Osborne. A girl in New Zealand, that was engaged to Harold Miley, the boy that was killed on Gum, writs to Alice, so I’m sending you a couple of amps.

Hows everything in Wallowa? Did you see Bill C? Alices chicken are falling off on their laying now but the eggs have a better flavor than Puget Sound eggs. What all did you do and who all did you see on your vacation Shirley Ann? Write me about it. I suppose Spooky had a good time and Ill bet he’s gorwing like a weed. Is he as fisty as ever?

How are Bills, Charley’s and Genes? Oh, yes the yard and flowers also Ruby and Leona? Where is Seona working?

We don’t see any air planes here and it sure seems odd. Most of the big planes are south and north from here so guess that’s the reason. Are many moving out of the project? Any more murders and robberys there?

The last letter I got from you was when you were in La Grande. You had gotten back from Wallowa. Alice, Roll, and two kids are asleep, its 2.30 in the afternoon. I’ll finish this and lay down for a bit. They talked of going to Hoxie this evening so will have them mail this. I back my letters this way, so may be you will get them. We have very poor mail service on the route here. Well must close. Always your forever – with oodles of Love, Daddy -

June 13, 1947 - Archie to Mable

Sun June 13-‘47

Dearest Mom and Shirley Ann,

Got the coat and letter also clippings. Feeling fine and usually buisy at something. Got started yesterday eve to cut wheat. Went a couple of rounds then had to quit as a rain came up. Got about 3/8 in but really rained hard with lots of lightening and thunder. I hope we can get to cutting tomorrow as I want to get it over with and try and get on with some one going on north if I can, or at least get a job plowing for a month if I can. Alice went down to Alberqurke to see Bud. She said his right leg was broken in 3 places, also his pelvic bone broke and was skinned up pretty bad. Was getting along as well as expected but had taken pneumonia. I suppose from the either. He no doubt will be there some time. Say just put a 3 cent stamp on the letters as they come just as quick.

Old curly sure likes to stick his snout out for a job doesn’t he. If I were you mom I wouldn’t do to much in giving them any advice about things, If they don’t put you in charge as that holds you up on your candling May be curley won’t get to take it after all, as the State man will have some thing to say about it.

How are you and Louise doing? About the same or are you faster? How did you come out for the last wk did you beat her? I dropped Howard H a card and told him I wanted to see them before I went back to Seattle.

Did Harold J say whether there was much work in or around Portland? How are you doing Shirley, Boy I’m sure getting a sun tan. I have been looking for you to write but guess you must not have any pencil.

I talked with the two fellows who went to school in KC and it seems as tho a person has to take the 9 mo course in Body and fender work. They seem to think a person can get a job in a shop some where and do better than by going there to school. I must write Irvin. We haven’t even got our pictures or Films yet. And it’s been almost 2 wk. yes 3 wks If we don’t get them this wk I’m going to have Alice write them. Boy I’ll not send any more there. I’ll send the Roll to you there.

Have you seen any of the fling sacers I haven’t. What do yu think they are. I think t Army is experimenting with them or else some foreign country is. Maybe they will get one yet. It has caused quite a stir hasn’t it. So Ruth and Mrs. O’Reily are quite thick. Oh well they will fall out jut as hard as yu know Ruth. Is Ann Herick still working? And who keeps her kids? Are many leaving the Project yet? Have you heard from Jessie yet? I would like to work till about Sept 15 then visit a while at Natoma then go to Silverton for a visit before I leave for Seattle. Land is too high and machinery is too high for one to think of raising wheat. Believe I’ll take a job at something till things settle down. A person could loose his eye teeth in farming now or else one could make it.

Has been Hot the last few days, was around a 100 yesterday and day before. 94 in shade now. I still can take the heat like I used too. Haven’t heard from any one or saw any one so don’t know any news to write. Alice is going in to Hoxie this afternoon so this will go out tonite. You will probably get it Tuesday. Hope you two are fine and getting along o.k. I think of you practicaly all the time so don’t think that I don’t miss you too. Will close for now with oodles of love to you Both. Shirley better not let the kids trapes in and out of the House as you know how they pick up things around there. And I’d hate to loose some of my things Be carefull please.

By for now, this means you Both, Always your Daddy.

Note: The letter stated June 13, 1947, but was in the envelope of July 13, 1947
