LETTERS FROM THE PAST

This blog is to honor those who have come before us. These are family letters that I have had for years and wanted to be able to share them with family. It's an interesting way of knowing how life was in the past.

Myron F Taylor with 3 of his buddies in 1952. Over the last 20 years I've been working on our family letters. Letters that have been passed down. Including letters from my parents to my great-grandmother. Every letter was saved by my great grandmother and grandmother. I hope someday to either print them or give them to a museum. I am copying the letters–not being able to photocopy all of them. Each letter is in script. I know today very few can read them. I hope you enjoy them.

Fred White to Archie - Sept 11, 1945

Silverton, Colo

Sept 11

Dear Archie,

I rec your nice long letter. That begun in June and ended in Aug. why don’t you get a Blind Sic to write your letters if you are to busy ha ha.

I have been sick since Sat with Inteslinel Flu I was sic as H—L. I missed a shift last night the first in since I been here over two years. Outside of when I had my leg Broke.

Clifford & Dude came over last Sat nite and stayed until Monday and we all went to

“2”

Ridgeway to the Rodeo Races and 4-H Fair and to the Dance at nite we had a good time that was the first time I had been away from here for a year I was over there last year. Clifford brought his Boy Geo Race Horse over there and run it in the ½ mile Saddle Horse Race and was first. He is 6 years old and is pretty fast he had him over to Grand Junction to the Rodeo & Stock Show and he beat everything it gets pretty chilly here nites. There was Ice yesterday morning. I got a card from Bro Geo Sat  it was from Old Mexico. They had been out to Helen

“3”

After Lucile she had been out there for a couple of months Bobs Boy Fred is back from Italy. Lyle is in Japan I think. They will have to put a Dog chain in every one of those Rats and stand over them with a Machine Gun. If I had Run things I would have droped a Hundred of them Bobs on them and blowed the whole Dam Tribe off the Face of the Earth. If they get a half a chance they will be ready fro another war in a few year. And of course the US will be the Goat and give them everything they want. I would liked to seen Rusa & Chime took care of them. I thought Truman was going

“4”

To be a lot better than Rosy but he seems to be following in his foot steps.

He wants to hush up the Pearl Harbor Deal I supose those Officers were Democrats. But if Old Churchill don’t get his Ham & Eggs he is liable to squeal. England is sure making a Squack because Truman shut off the Flow of money giving to England. If them Dam Halfwits would get busy and do something they might make a living for their ownselves.  Old Joe is liable to step in there and learn them a thing or too.

If Hitler had worked it right and left Rusia alone he could have taken England.

“5”

And I would liked to seen him done it if he would of let us alone. England is always starting something and them wanting the US to help them out.

Harolds folks are all O.K. he has about 40 men soon working at the mine. I would like to go back home this winter and see the kids. All I have seen from back there is Rosa & kids and Sylvia, Cliffords Girl and Rosa Dorris, Bobs Girl was here a week in Aug. Sylvia White is married to a Soldier by the name of Ralph Biggs. He & her  graduated at Healy the same year he is in a Hospital In Cal

“6”

He was wounded in the Hand. And she is in Denver she did work at the Kaiser Amineution Plant for nearly a year and was layed off and is working at Buckly Field now.

He is to be discharged in a couple of wees and then they are going some place to live.

Raul & Alice are building a new house.

Everyone had a good crop back there and got a good price for it. Andy Johnson’s Soninlaw died last week he was Cliff Bland he was Sheriff of Gove Co 4 years tell Mable & Shirley Hello and don’t be so Dam long answering this letter

My Birthday is the 24 of June.

Love Uncle Fred

Fred White to Archie & Mable - Oct 1945

Silverton, Colo.

Oct 26 (Postage stamp is dated 1945)

Dear Archie & Mable,

I rec your letter and was surprised that you ans so soon but was glad to here from you. How is the weather up where you are? We have been having lots of snow. And it was 6 Below, Tuesday morning. It has been since the last 3 days. Sunday your Aunt Bess and I have been married 52 years. That is a long time to live with one woman. The People here thinks that is something Wonderful.

“2”

Most of them here have been married 3 or 4 times. I guess they all like a change. We wrote to the kids and wanted them to all come out Sunday to Celebrate with us. But I don’t suppose any of them will come. They are all to busy if any Folks were living a Thousand miles away I would try to go and see them once or twice a year.

Mother is putting up Grapes that Geo wife sent us.

The Hunting Season closes next Wednesday I never

“3”

went Hunting as I had no Gun or Horse. They sure got a lot of Elk & Deer, and we have had several mese  of both.

We got a letter from Lyle and he told us he sent two Jap Rifles home they were 31 caliber. He is in the Philippines.

Fred, Bobs Boy is home from Italy. He has to go to some camp in Texas to get his Discharge.

I got two Pickup loads of wood from the Mine and had it saved up

“4”

and I put it in my Coal House yesterday I have it nearly full. If I had a Truck and a Power Saw. I could make more money than I could working in the mine. They charge $10 for a Pickup load of Blocks. I suppose Jo & Nettie are home now. Joe went to Wyo with some fellows to hunt and Nettie stayed with Mattie.

I saw in the Denver Post when Albert Moorhead got killed in Lymon last week by a car. I guess that must be my Cousin.

“5”

I wrote to Mattie and told her to find out for sure if it was him, but have not heard yet.

Harolds folks are all well. I think that Horse of little Geo’s is Steel Dut stock, we look for Clifford & Dude over Sunday. They live about 150 miles from us.

I suppose you heard that Howards wife got a Divorce from him.

Alice Miley is Teaching their Home School this winter. They are Building a sew Horse.

“6”

Is Ellen Wineland still living. Is this Hackerott Boy you talk about. Bills Boy. I know one of Bills Boys hi name is Ernie he lives at Atwood. He and Curry are great Friends. I went with him to McCook once when I was up there he drives a Big Transport all the time.

How is Irvin coming with No 7. Does she keep him the Hoasgow must of the time,

If you folks leave Seattle, you must come own here and see us.

“7”

Helen McClure left her and went to Seattle. She is a widow she has a aBoy & Girl with her. She used to cook at the Hospital here. It begins to look like Truman was following in Rasys foot steps. They had anight to Hang him if he loanes Britian any more money, it looks like there Halfwits could do a little something for themselves. They think the US is Santa Claus. Well I must close,

Ans soon

Love Uncle Fred.

Dear mom –

Guess I’ll drop a line, I feeling fine hope you are too. I’m in Ocean Park right now. Just fooling around. Went over and saw Lois last night. Boy not much doing around here. But we alway find something to do if we can. How is Jr making it in school. Hope he’s doing OK. Send me Jr coat size and I’ll try and get one some time down here, there fairly cheap. Really nice too. And shoes are cheap too. But can’t get them. Tell Jr. to be sure he gets through school. And maybe the war be over and he can go to so good advanced school or something . I’ll help him. Because I want to see him make something of himself. Tell him. Don’t never get in trouble, it’s easier to earn it because he’ll appreciate it more. I know from sad experience. It’s the best but he don’t have to find it out like I did. Because it’s behind you the rest of your life. I’m not kidding, let him read this. Hope you’ll understand Jr. I do now. Well mom this ain’t very long but you’ll all know I think of you all the time. It’s a hard life in a way. Well will close for now. With all the love I’ve got, Mat.

Dear Mom,

Will drop you a line. I would like you to send me some hangers to put my cloth on. As they get rinckled laying around. Well I would like to get Jr to go to Baker & find out why Grace isn’t getting any letter here. She has wrote one letter that I have received and tomorrow it will be a month since I entered the army. Don’t say I told him to, but he can just happen to go to baker & you know well he could go down & see her and see if she had heard from me as you hadn’t or else you can write her a letter that you would like her to tell you to write you or something. Well guess I’ll close for now. I am feeling fine going into town tomorrow night will get you a picture.
