 Dear Bro and Wife:

 Well I should have written sooner but I have been awfully busy the last few weeks. I have been selling Home cleaning machines manufactured by Gun & bc company – the first in the world.

 We certainly have had lots of rain lately – some of the apricot crop has been frozen but all the prunes are OK so far.

 Say old chap do you have any good liquor back there? One of the fellows and I scouted around some to day but it’s hard to get unless you are known. You can get plenty of wine but I wanted something a little stronger. Is William still farming grandfather’s place?

 I wonder what and how they settled grandfather Wineland’s estate. I believe that we were supposed to get father’s share – because grandfather often told me that we would on account he had to pay off a mortgage on the mules that Dad sold and Judge Binnell had the mortgage.

 Say old chap can’t you send me some fo the Osbone Farmer issues also some of the old Natoma’s Independents? I’d like to see and know what the old folks are doing back in the old home country. No foolin!

 I get lonesome for the old gang and think back at times at the times we used to have it all seems like a dream doesn’t it?

 Tell all the folks that I think of them and don’t forget to drop me a line –

Remembering - Mable Taylor

 My brother sent out this photo. It's from when we lived in Japan. I thought it was fun to post because her Anniversary was coming up. January 31, 1931 she married Myron F. Taylor, Sr. He had passed away a year or two before this photo. 

I remember that coat and her scarf that held her hair down.

Dear Brother and Wife:

I am really ashamed of myself for not writing you sooner than I did – I have been pretty busy and have put off writing you folks longer than I should.

Well it has been quite wet here on the coast for the last couple of weeks, the most rainer winter than for a couple of years – but they surely need the rain.

I moved from San Francisco down here last week, to work this city for the company. I think in a week or so – after the people get Xmas out of their heads maby  then they’ll buy some Super Silk Hosiery.

I suppose that you have in a fair sized wheat crop this year? I’d certainly like to be back there and go coon hunting with you old timer – we’d get some no foolin – or we’d know the reason why.

I certainly would like to see you folks – couldn’t you possibly make it out here this summer some time. We could take in some wonderful drives and some beautiful camping and fishing places.

Have you heard from Father I cannot see why he doesn’t write me – I wrote him a letter last fall and he didn’t answer it – I can’t see – I’d sure like to drive back some day – I’d certainly give him a surprise of his life.

Just where in Idaho is Aunt Nettie and Joe located? Is Aunt Mattie and Bob in Loveland Colorado?

I suppose that Uncle Louis is in the same old place and William is still on the farm and, who is keeping house for Grandfather? Uncle George is still in Lomay – I forgot how to spell some of the old towns, I suppose Uncle Fried is on the Ranch out in Western Kansas?

I suppose that you see Uncle Clint and Aunt Mary often as you live near Fair Port do you not?

Now don’t wait to write me as long as I did you folks -Oh! Yes I have a big surprise for you one of these here days I’ll tell you all about it shortly –

Dear Bro and Wife,

Well I expect that you think that I have disappeared off the earth by this time no doubt. Well I am here in Portland working like a son of a gun. I am still with the same corporation that I was when I wrote last and have been promoted several times and am just in the eve of another promotion for them which will mean better than a hundred a week for me – also now just hold your breath – both of you – I am also just on the eve of a most wonderful, adventure in my life no foolin – that sweetest little woman in all America is just looking on so sweetly as I’m writing these few lines well we are getting married before the week is out smoke that in your pipe, and if I was there we’d certainly throw a party that you’d never forget for many years to come – I’d have the whole gang cock eyed –

But I happened to meet the most wonderful girl in all my travels – her house is in Canada – “that cold country” but she isn’t – and I’ve certainly fell hard the hardest fall in my life, and I know that she’ll be a great help to me also in my work – I know she’ll be a true pal and partner that’s the big thing.

Write and tell me all the news also all about your selves – tell all the folks helo and that I’ll try and catch up in my correspondence to them.

Dear bro and Wife,

Well Archie old top – I haven’t heard from you for some time. Now write to me here and tell me all the news and about your selves.

I suppose that you had a dandy wheat crop this year. I see all through Kansas that the crops were very good.

I have been spending the summer up in the Mts. For a Big Power Co and have been working in the Office and also had charge of one of their commissary’s- but I’m putting in applications with the standard Oil Union Oil and several Comporters to try and land a two or three year contract with them for duty in the Orient or India or Java if possible, if I cannot make one of them – then I’m going to ship to Australia and land a job with some of the Importers on their Coffee plantations on some Island they pay very good money – you stay 21 months at 250$ or 50 English lbs and they pay you two years times.

Then I’ll come back home for a visit to see you – but not until it got so darn cold there. I came on down to San Francisco you know and maby you don’t that my wife and I have separated. She got so darn contrary that it made my life miserable so we separated – she got every darn thing we had.

I’ll make a stake again and the next time – when I get a divorce from her – I’ll certainly watch my step next time. It’s the only life to live – if both can get along – but it certainly is Hell – if you pull opposite each other – she was older than I too that had a lot to do with us not getting along.

I  muke a good stake and then I’ll settle down some where.

I’d very much like to see you folks – and I wish you all the happiness in the world and may you long continue to live it.

Have you heard from Father lately? And what is he doing and how is he getting along?

Dearest Bro and Wife:

We have been waiting anxiously to hear from you but haven’t heard a scratch since last spring.

How is the wheat crop good I hope.

You ought to see our Police dog – I’ll send you a picture of him soon. He’ll do lots of strunts earry things, jump about to and fro and seak and sit – lay downand to hurl me – you ought to see him scent all around the house – and he’ll never give up till he finds me.

We have a new car now – dodge sport touring brand new! – say boy some car too – about six of us drove to Ventura about 70 miles – in about 2 hours and up the mountain grades in high.

I think maby that next summer if everything is O.K. that my wife – and I and our dog will drive ack and see all the folks and on up in Nebr to see dad.

I’m thinking seriously about quitting the Hotel and go estimating jobs for tile and mantel business I have a good chance to get in a place here in Glendale and start in and learn the business – it’s a wonderful paying work too – a good estimator can work up to 3 or 4 hundred a week.

Have you been duck hunting yet this year? We went up to Ventura a couple of weeks ago – but poor shooting – too many gun clubs have all the best shooting. I got a moland a jack snip also a jack rabbit. I dididn’t get a chance to go deer hunting this year – but I intend to go quail hunting before the season closes.

How is grandfather White also grandfather Wineland getting along? Also all our Uncles and Aunts and Cousins?

I haven’t heard from any one for about six months. If they don’t want to write all right with me – they can’t say that they made much for me and I can always get along with out any of them – I tho’t maby that when I left that Grandfather White was sore about my quitting him. Maby you never knew – well here goes – he was paying another fellow more money than I, for equal amount of work – and Bill – well he was riding the tractor all day so I said the farther you get from your relatives the better off I am – they expect more from you than any one else and pay less.

Well maby I’ll surprise them all when we drive back.

Well write me all about you folks and all the new and don’t fail to tell the folks helo for us.

Wish you folks could see our little 5 room home, we have here – with grape fruit, orange and avocado trees and a fine garden it would make you want to come here and live – adios Senior –

Dear Archie:

We rec’d your letter Wed. and have been busy, so didn’t get a chance to write till now.

Say this Korean Business doesn’t look any too good. I think Russua will pawn off commence China troops to help the North Koreans, before she would help out and I think she’s afraid of US giving her an atomic Bombing.

I talked to Mabel to day and I said I’d certainly send some money and all your bonds to you to bank back there. I think Marion and I’ll send a couple of thous and to some bank east of the nets as if this power Key is ever lit Russia will sure as hell bomb Seattle as one of the 1^st US Cities and believe me if they started, I’m getting out. I told Brown that I was pulling out for Montana or points east and no fooling.

You better got lived up on something back there and have Mabel and Shirley come there it’s sure lots safer, and get a extra room for Marion & me –

Boeing’s getting a new contract that’s what Bob, he’s Marion’s sisters husband, he said that a plane with 4 stars was at Boeings for two days, Gen Dewit it was I guess that he’s setting Boeings up for more production.  Those fellows working here, if anything starts with be froze to their jobs, and I wouldn’t want that her in Seattle.

Well I was sorry to hear that the crops are not so good there.

We are leaving next Fri eve for our vacation, will either go up in Canada or to Glacier Park, will write you a line at either place. If we go to Calgary will look up George at Bowdin and say helo for all of us.

We are going over to your place this evening as Shirley leaves in the morning with her grandmother for Oregon.

Dear Bro and Wife;

Well we moved again, as you see by the address – the next time we move will be in a place of our own. We are going to buy a couple of acres of land near the City and build us a chicken ranch, and then in a year or so I want to quilt the Hotel business and put all my time on our little chicken ranch.

We just got back from the Dog show at Pasadena this evening. We saw them judging the shepherds (German Police dogs) and I have come to the conclusion, after seeing dogs from Seattle, Spokane, San Francisco and all over the Pacific Coast that the Police Dog stands out as the best of them all.

I am going to get a pup pretty soon.

It rained so hard this evening that it was hard driving the car home.

I sure wish that you and your wife was here and could go on the vacations with us this Summer – We’re going way back up in the Sierra’s and then pack in so we can get some real Trout fishing.

I’d rather catch them than any sport a going.

You two had better plan coming out at least by next fall – then we can take in a few days of deer hunting. I want a nice pair of antlers mounted.

As I am writing, we are listening to a nice program on our Radio – we have a four tube Radiala and loud speaker and can hear it all over the house.

Well write and tell me how you and everybody else is getting along – and all the news as I crave news from all of the folks.

Dear Friend Mable –

Again it’s time to be sending Seasons Greeting to friends and loved ones. Noticed in particular a greeting in a Christmas card – and I quote – Friends seem nearer Dear ones Dearer At Christmas which is so true – and I might add friends like you. We have been friends for a long time – and I never expect to have another one like you.

You and Archie – as I have mentioned a good many times when I’ve written you were the nicest neighbors we ever had.

Today is a lovely day – we have had such nice weather this Fall. We are needing moisture here at present. Should it snow would very likely do little or no good as it generally drifts.

This weather might stay nice until Christmas – then again may be not. Thank you so much for your good letter enjoyed it so much.

Thanks too for the lovely card – conveying the loveliest of thoughts it was enjoyed too and appreciated.

I am so happy for you both that you have bought a home. One your like and in a nice neighborhood. Some time that isn’t so easy to find and I would imagine in a city of Seattle’s size that would be quite true.

By your description the arrangement is nice.

I hope all goes well and that in the not too distant future it will all be yours so best of luck.

You folks done well to get out of KS – and you stayed out – as did Howard & Velma. It’s for sure they wouldn’t have a little home if they had stayed in this cotton pickin state “.— with I guess for the most part it’s poor wages.

I’ve noticed very few people that ever go to the western states never come back to Kansas – but to the states in this section of the country.

Folks you remember that youngster that Aunt Dora took when a baby – by the name of Joe Westhusin – we used to call him “Little Joe.” He lives in Portland Oregon – he was in this section of the country and he and his wife called on us. He is a real estate broker out there.

I’ve been addressing my or guess it should be our Christmas Greetings of course some of them are mine – like to include a few letters in some others some notes – and some – just my name or ours as it so happens to be. Of course Mary has some she sends.

A letter recently from Jerry & Bess – they are still at Myrtle Beach AFB SC. He wrote he was among the few officers that was still there at the base when he came – so he of course is expecting a transfer to some other place.

He is going to school at night – trying to work towards a degree. The Air Force is not sending him he is doing this on his own accord – but of course the AF is providing the opportunity.

Had Shirley’s address this year so I am sending them a card – and I included a letter – not a very interesting one I’m sure – but any way I wrote a bit.

Jerry’s liked Germany a lot and they too went many places of interest.

Believe I’ve mentioned this before – but I think Jerry was at the Hahn AB when there. That may not be spelled right – but perhaps it’s near enough so one would know the base I have reference to.

Yes – Nettie’s son Nyle and family did come to see her this last Summer. Nettie told me they have such a nice family.

She also told me that they still hope some time to have a little boy – but may be that may he just wishful thinking.

So glad to know that Archie’s hearing and is helpful to him and by now hope he is accustomed to it.

Guess you missed seeing it in the Independent – but Ron & Judy have a baby son – was born in September.

Glad to know that your Mother is quiet well – and that she is able to go to California. Nice she can and enjoy herself in the sunset of her life. Know you have mentioned her age – but I’ve forgotten how old – but would imagine she would be past seventy.

Suppose your extra busy – getting your Christmas cards addressed etc.

Nice birthday card and good letter from Aunt Dora today.

She is real well for her many years and is still out on the farm.

Bill & Rita came down to do a bit of shopping Thursday. We are always so glad to see them but he is always so busy so they do not come very often.  Bill is real well I guess – and Rita as usual has her good and bad days.

Hope you and Archie are as well as usual “- so take good care of yourselves. I’ll or perhaps Mary will be mailing you a little package for Christmas.

Any Idea?

 Today I was going through photos of my mother as well as a lot of the family. I would like to post a couple, but I found people are taking my photos and posting them as theirs. I had to mark them private because the information is always incorrect. 

Here is one I found. That's my mother in the front. I don't know who the children behind her are. I believe this was in OR before they moved to Seattle. If you might know who they are, I would love to find out. There is nothing written on the back. 

I thought I lost this photo when I gave it to the museum to post next to dads name on the plaque. They lost the photo anyway. When I found this, I was thrilled. I may send it to them through the email, so I can keep the original photo. 

This is some of the stuff I have on my family tree. I found a ton more letters to post here, so I have a lot of work to do, to get those letters posted. 

In the meantime, I thought you might like to see some photos from over 50 years ago. 

Marion Wineland Re: Irvin Wineland July 1963

Dear Archie and Mabel:

Hate to worry you unnecessarily but thin I should let you know that Irvin is in the Hospital in San Diego. This morning he got dizzy, and passed out for a few minutes. Then when the neighbors and I got him on to the cot (he was in the garage with it happened) he vomited blood so took him to the hospital. He seems quite himself to talk to so it wasn’t a stroke but a hemoridge. The doctors are checking. They don’t think its his chest but seems to be in his stomack or maybe an ulcer. Anyway hope its noting too bad.

As soon as I can find out I will let you  know. They gave him an x-ray, and stuck a tube down in him. We had to come back to Fallbrock tonight. My neighbors were with me. The doctors will check some more. It is a good hospital and I am sure will get good care. I think they will transfer him to the veterans hospital if he has to stay awhile. He seemed to feel quite well this morning before it happened and ate his breakfast as usual. Well don’t worry too much and I promise to let you know as soon as I can see what develops, He does not seem to be in any pain at all and talks quite strong and sensible as usual.

Dear Friends,

This year we’re trying to get our cards out early so we can sit back and enjoy the holidays. Also, we want to pass along our new address.

We had a very busy 1983. It began with a vacation to Florida in January. Believe it or not with all the traveling we’re done, that was our first trip to Florida and what an enjoyable one it was, too. In addition to the tourist attractions, we visited old friends Mel & Ruth Daniel and Dixie & Mae Johnson.

Being in real estate Ken is always running across nice houses, so the inevitable happened – we moved April 30^th. The month of May was really hectic trying to get settle and preparing for Cindy’s wedding on the 28^th. She married a nice young man, Paul Barnett, from Adelphi, Maryland. It was a beautiful day and they had a lovely wedding in the Crofton Baptist Church. Stephanie was her maid of honor, along with two bridesmaids. We were so happy that my folks were able to come. Cindy and Paul bought our “old” house, so we kept it in the family. It’s nice to have them near. Cindy has taken an educational leave from the airlines, so is attending school as well as working for mortgage company.

In July Ken and I flew to Wichita for my 30^th high school class reunion. We were overseas for both the 10^th and 20^th, so that was the first time I’d seen many of my classmates since high school.

Stil filled with wanderlust, in October we met our friends Fred & annie Stumme in Munich. From there we traveled to Augsburg, Garmisch, Stuttgart, Zweibrucken and Frankfurt – spent 10 days reminiscing and visiting old haunts. Needless to say, we stuffed ourselves with that good German food—schnitzels, fired potatoes, cake smothered in whipped cream. The weather was atypical—absolutely perfect. We had such a good time!! The Stummes spent a few days in Berlin prior to meeting us, and went on to England for a visit when we returned home. We just felt we shouldn’t be away any longer.

Stephanie came home with a ring the other night, so we’re going to have a 1984 wedding. She’s marrying a fellow she went to high school with—they’ve been dating about three years. We’re very pleased. Our family is growing quickly. Stephanie is still with Logicon—going on four years now.

Our door is open if you’re ever our way. Hope each of you is blessed with a healthy, happy 1984!!

Christmas ‘83

 

Hi – Merry Christmas from Minnesota. Was such a lovely surprise to get a phone call from Chris last winter. He & Bud had quite a chat judging from all the news bud relayed to me. Great to hear.

We’re all just fine. Our life has changed a bit since Kathy graduated in June. She started at Minnesota State U in Sept. It’s about 75 mi SW of us. Has been getting home every 2^nd or 3^rd weekend so don’t miss her too much.

Bud is working Sat thru Mon. 12 hour mid shift. Works in the computer room & loves it. (I call it retirement!) Gives him lots of time to party during the week.

Shel is at Northern Telecom. A computer firm west of Mpls. Seems to be doing well just started selling Amway products etc. p.t. She sounds so optimistic about it.

Val works for Metro WW Comm. Also, but in St. Paul. Has been there 5 ½ yrs. & likes it very much & doing well.

I worked p.t. at a garden & apple orchard about a mile up the road from us. The season just ended and I miss it – really enjoyed it.

Still have 2 leagues & occasional volunteer work.

My folks are just great, both retired now & loving it. They go to Oregon for a few months after xmas. Dad started golfing last year & just addicted to it.

Dearest Mom and Dad,

It is pouring down rain here and it really seems fitting that it should with President Kennedy laying in the White House. Isn’t it a waiste of a brilliant mind? I don’t think I have every seen any place close down so tightly as this base. Within an hour after his death all work was stopped every business on the post was quietly closed. What a terrific shock.

Well, we are all fine. I can’t seem to get on the ball and get a thing done. Think I’ll sit and put quilt blocks together. There is nothing on the TV and Radio but the news so I can guess that I will sit and watch it.

I feel so sorry for his wife and children to be left so suddenly and so terribly. She has had more than her share of grief in the past couple of months.

I received a letter from Park Wineland this morning in the mail. I’ll copy it here in this letter so you can have a copy of it.

Your letter of the 31^st, helped out, but In order to connect them up we’ll have to have as many generations back as you can give and then maybe I will be able to connect them up.

Of course I was under the impression that your folks might be related to the fellow John who married the granddaughter of St. Clair. His children were

Now John was the grandson of Christopher who came to this country. He had one son Michael, and Michael had two sons Christopher, John. CB 1799 J-B 1810

There were some other Winelands in that area too, that had moved there from eastern Penna.

He had 10 children 6 boys and 4 girls

The first bon 1833 and the last 1854.

One went to Detroit, Mich. Where he is buried. One to Wisconsin, One to Elkhart Indianna, One went to Dallis Texas.

However in that same area were at least two or three other Weinland’s who moved west from Lancaster County Pa. So if we can get together the data of present, as well as the data going back as far as you can mabe we can find the answer.

Also, there is a Wineland, mentioned in “Mark Twayne” book on the Mississippi and he is buried in Ill. At Hamburg and his dependents live in that area.

I did receive a letter from H. L. Wineland 12362 Lorelein Ave. Garden Grove California. It contained a German copy of a will signed by John? Weinland dated 1786 The copy came from Germany.

So if you can gather together the date, as far back as possible, may be I’ll be able to connect them.

Note; James E Wineland 30 McKinley Ave, West Caldwell, New Jersey wrote to me about a letter I sent to his brother in 1954 in Indianna.

Now, if you can send me a couple of the Winelands in Kansas addresses I’ll sit down and write some letters off and try and get some more information. I’ll get a letter off to Aunt Laura Wineland and maybe she can find out some dates and some information of part of the family. This is really getting interesting. Myron is writing everything down in a book for us to keep ourselves. I haven’t heard a thing from the Archives yet but am sure we will this next couple of weeks.

Took Pat into the Doctors on Thursday afternoon and found he had a good cold and two ear infections. They gave us four kinds of medicine and he just loves it. He is doing really well and doesn’t get into being crabby. He sure wants his mommy to sit and rock him and so we do. He is getting real well about letting others too.

Chris got his report card last week. He got nine A;s Nine B’s and 3 C’s. We were sure thrilled with it. He seems to be better adjusted in a school of mostly service children.

Well I can’t seem to think of anything more to say so will close for now.

It's times like this I wish the last name was signed. I have both sides (TRUE and BIRGE) that this could go to or come from. One of these days I will figure it out. I believe this is one of Solon's siblings children, as the True family all moved to OR from KS and OH.

I wish they would have said who the one behind William is. It is probably one of the 2 other brothers of Solon. They could be Cyrus or Lawrence G. True. Of the 9 children there were 4 boys, 5 girls. Solon's father was Mason True married to Esther Baker Campbell.

Dear Archie & Mable,

We rec’d your letter yesterday and was glad to hear from you.

No, we did n’t have any damage done by the tidal wave. I was at ork and they rec’d the news of one coming, I was sort of worried about Marion and Puki our Siamese cat, when I got home Marion said the Police came around early in the morning and gave the warning and instead of going back to the Mts back of us they all went over to the beach and watched it come in. Marion said it was only 3 or 4 ft high on our beach, so it only went over the road a few ft, we’re a block and a half away from it. A few places like Hilo, waived on Oaki and on the Island of Kauai got it pretty good our sending a map to you some idea of the area hit.

I got a letter from Roy Harvey back at Osborne KS, and he said things were pretty dry also half of the business places had closed doors as things were pretty tough there.

Yes I know Al Smith whose photo you sent, he’s at Volunteer Park and has quite a few Orchids of his own.

I have a phalaenopsis , which is a Orchid from the Phillipines that bloomed in Nov and lasted up to 2 weeks ago and now has over 50 flower buds on it. Said will have Dooms for over a 6 mo period. I paid $6.00 for the plant last fall and it’s easily worth 75 to 100$ one gets a real good one ut of 15 to 20 I also picked up a extra choice Vauda Orchid a Sandarina –  which is dark pinkish cast with a exquisite bloom about the size of a small saucer and if it blooms next time as good as it did in Dec, I’ll place it in the first Orchid Show if I can time it’s bloom, for it is an extra choice one.

This blame job that I’m on has kept me tied down, but it will be over this weekend, thank heavens. I sure don’t want any more news press jobs, we had to assemble every blame roller, plates frames and they weigh from 1 to over 2 tons each too darn heavy and dangerous. I’ve only had 5 days off since the 1^st of the year one hundred dollars was my smallest check that is take home pay – up to $124 they only pay 1 ½ for Sat and Sun.

Over here, so I’ll take a darn good rest for a while.

I sure was surprised at Old Brown. I suppose he told Don and Ed off and they just canned him, which they should of done years ago. Old Hutch has been failing for several years so I wasn’t surprised at him.

Don wrote a wonderful recommendation letter for me, so if I do need work it may help, but all the machinists over here are all working, so one don’t have any trouble finding work.

Marion said she might work at the Tel Co. for a while and she wants me to stay and watch the place and do some work such as a out door fire place, etc.

We’ve had some rain the last month or so but with sunshine in between so it is not too bad. These darn pens are hay wire.

Well I will jut add a note to Irvin’s letter. He has told you most of the news. All houses here have been built up a little so that if water gets underneath it won’t come into the house unless it is several feet deep. Since Irvin has been working and having two meals away from home I have been practically living on bananas. I eat two or three for breakfast with my coffee and for lunch. Not getting very thin either tho I am happy to say I haven’t gained any since being here in Hawaii.

Our Siamese cat may be going to have kittens. We tried to mate her to a purebred Siamese Tom named Rhone. Don’t know what results were yet. Have you still go the black car and your bird? We have some beautiful birds here – wild ones. They have red topknots and white breasts, grey wings. Also we have the red cardinal and minor birds galore. Puhi tries to catch them but they are two fast for her. She climbs away up in the tall trees after them.

Today I sat out under the Banana trees sewing. Am making a nightgown for the Kahuki hospital – a childs. This is a project taken over by the Kahuku Women’s Society. It meets once a month. I go when I can. The Minister’s wife came and got me this month so I went. Only about ten or twelve woman who are mostly army personnel and Haoles – white. Once in a while Irvin and I go the Methodist Church in Kahuku – 6 miles away. I get letters from my sisters so keeps me busy writing them. It’s nice we have airmail because it takes only a day or two to reach them.

Guess Shirley would do well to have another baby while she is about it or Chris will get spoiled. Well its bed time so will sign off and get this stamped and ready to mail tomorrow,

Seems a long time ago since I last saw you standing in front of your house and saying Goodbye. Hoe you will get over here some day soon for a visit.
