LETTERS FROM THE PAST

This blog is to honor those who have come before us. These are family letters that I have had for years and wanted to be able to share them with family. It's an interesting way of knowing how life was in the past.

Myron F Taylor with 3 of his buddies in 1952. Over the last 20 years I've been working on our family letters. Letters that have been passed down. Including letters from my parents to my great-grandmother. Every letter was saved by my great grandmother and grandmother. I hope someday to either print them or give them to a museum. I am copying the letters–not being able to photocopy all of them. Each letter is in script. I know today very few can read them. I hope you enjoy them.

1963 - Park Wineland

Saturday Afternoon

23,November 1963

Dearest Mom and Dad,

It is pouring down rain here and it really seems fitting that it should with President Kennedy laying in the White House. Isn’t it a waiste of a brilliant mind? I don’t think I have ever seen any place close down so tightly as this base. Within an hour after his death all work was stopped every business on the post was quietly closed. What a terrific shock.

Well, we are all fine. I can’t seem to get on the ball and get a thing done. Think I’ll sit and put quilt blocks together. There is nothing on the TV and Radio but the news so I can guess that I will sit and watch it.

I feel so sorry for his wife and children to be left so suddenly and so terribly. She has had more than her share of grief in the past couple of months.

I received a letter from Park Wineland this morning in the mail. I’ll copy it here in this letter so you can have a copy of it.

Here goes –

November 20, 1963

Mrs. M. Taylor

Fort Meade, Md.

Dear folks;

Your letter of the 31st, help out, but in order to connect them up we’ll have to have as many generations back as you can give, and then maybe I will be able to connect them up.

Of course I was under the impression that your folks might be related to the fellow John who married the granddaughter of St. Clair. His children were:

George Washington Wineland

John Albert

David Baldwin

Daniel St. Clair

Mary Elizabeth

Robert Graham

Margaret Balfear

Henry Clay

Winfield Scott

Ellen Douglas

Now John was the grandson of Christopher who came to this country. He has one son Michael, and Michael had two sons Christopher, John. C b 1799 J-b 1818

There were some other Winelands in that area too, that had moved there from eastern Penna.

Christopher, only had two sons.

Hardy Hill B 1835

Christopher B 1839

John B 1810

He had 10 children 6 boys and 4 girls

The first born 1833 and the last 1854

One went to Detroit, Mich. Where he is buried

One to Wishconsin

One to Galleon Ohio

One went to Elkhart Indiana

On went to Dallis Texas

However in that same area were at least tow or three other Weinland’s who moved west from Lancaster County Pa.

So if we can get together the data at present, as well as the data going back as far as you can maybe we can find the answer.

Also, there is a Wineland, mentioned in “Mark Twayne” Book on the Mississippi and he is buried in Ill. At Hamburg and his decedents live in that area.

I did receive a letter from H.L. Wineland 12362 Loralein Ave. Garden Grove California, It contained a german copy of a will signed by John? Wineland dated 1786 The copy came from Germany.

So if you can gather together the data, as far back as possible, may be I’ll be able to connect them up.

Thanks

Park E Wineland

Note: James E Wineland 30 McKinley Ave West Caldwell, New Jersey wrote to me about a letter I sent to his brother in 1954 in Indiana.

Now, if you can send me a couple of the Winelands in Kansas addresses I’ll sit down and write some letters off and try and get some more information. I’ll get a letter off to Aunt Laura Wineland and maybe she can find out some dates and some information of part of the family. This is really getting interesting. Myron is writing everything down in a book for us to keep ourselves. I haven’t heard a thing from Archie yet but a m sure we will this next couple of weeks.

Took Pat into the Doctors on Thursday afternoon and found he had a good cold and two ear infections. They gave us four kinds of medicine and he just loves it. He is doing real well and doesn’t get into being crabby. He sure wants his mommy to sit and rock him and so we do. He is getting real well about letting others too.

Chris got his report card last week. He got nine A’s, nine B’s and 3 C’s. We were sure thrilled with it. He seems to be better adjusted in a school of mostly Service childen.

Well I can’t seem to think of anything more to say so will close for now.

We send to you both,

All our Love, Shirley & Myron & all

Eugene OR - Bill's Death

 Eugene Oregon

Dec 19, 1941

 Dear Mrs. Wineland –

Received your letter today and am sending you a clipping that will explain about Bill. It is a terrible thing and the man has been indicted on 2nd degree murder charge. His trial comes up Jan 5th and I wish they could hang him. He hit Bill with asomething and I don’t think Bill ever knew what hit him. I guess you knew Jennie left Bill and Wayne two years ago. Wayne joined the Navy this last of Oct. He was home just a week and we heard from him today. They had intended to send him to air school in Seattle but now that the war is on he will have to do Sea Service and heaven only knows what that means. He said he would let us know his address later as he didn’t know himself. I’ll let you know when I find out if you want me to.

I have heard Jeannie and Bill mention you folks but I can’t place you. Wish you’d tell me which cousin you are. You may hear that Bill drank a ot but don’t believe too much. He didn’t drink any more than the rest of the family. He was divorced in Cottage Grove and he had made a lot of friends there. I can’t yet believe he is gone. Jennie was here and acted mighty sorry. She went back to Baker, Oregon 2436 Church St. but I haven’t heard from her since she went back. Thanks for writing and would like to hear from you. 992 Willamette St. Eugene Oregon.

Note: This may be the other Wineland family that I have been trying to find. We met a Wineland that knew my grandmother but had no idea who his father was. Said his father was killed in Oregon and his mother never talked about him. At this time I do not know if he is Wineland or someone else. Article is missing from letter.

Geo. & Violet White Dec 9th, 1942

 Luray Kansas

Dec 9, 1942

 Dear Mable Archie & Shirley,

Rec’d your Christmas card and the nice letter inside. Was so pleased to hear from you and to know you are getting along so well.

We are well. Been having terrible cold weather here now for over a week zero and below every morning. Ground has been white with snow since the day before Christmas not over 6 or 8 in on level but has drifted a little.

Had a letter from Fred White said they had two ft on level and drifts 5 ft deep.

Curry was along today Rosa’s husband. He travels and sells combines you know. Helen is still in Calf Dale works in the Volte Air Craft & Helen still works in the walnut house. Began work there two years in Sept. They closed down in March last summer & didn’t open until Oct. but she drew her compensation check $10.00 a week until they opened. She is an over seer or check girl has a table of 20 women & girls empty’s their boxes of nuts & grades them & punches their card and one for herself keeps her busy. There are always around 150 girls women working there. She makes about $18.00 a week. Dale gets $5.00 a day. Dale was off work a couple of mo’s had an appendix operation. Gary is in 2nd grade. Was 7 yrs old Xmas day.

Howard & his wife came home from Calif. A couple of years ago in Oct her father died.

Then they went to Kans City and have been down there now two years this month they both work and make pretty good she does off ice work.

Lucille is quite a big girl will be 12 yrs old the 9th of Mar. Anyone would think she was 14 or 15 that didn’t know her. She is in 6th grade. Plays basket ball and plays in the band.

Your new range must be very pretty. Yes I know everyone out there burns wood. I visited Cliff a couple of years ago and they had a nice white range stove. We would sure love to visit you folks but it seems so hard for George to ever get away from home any more and money is always so scarce.

Has so much land to look after since Cy’s death & Ruth has moved to Osb. He put that place out to wheat himself hired it done so if there is any wheat this year it will all be his own. He went up there every day for 3 mons from fall to Christmas. The old place was so terrible run down.

Everett Dawe & wife live down at the stone house. He and Everett painted the old red roof sure does look nice had to all most build a new porch on North East & south porch was so rotted out & put on new shingles on roof of porch.  Tore the south part of the barn off and patched up the north part & shingled it new and fixed up grainers & machine shed and painted them red. You sure would hardly recognize the place.

Has had two or 3 new government pounds on that place was two then had another on built over west this fall has a nice pond down on the place where Everett lives that keeps the well down by the barn supplied with water now.

Geo. Bought 120 head of young cattle a year ago last fall sold them this Dec. made good money on them.

He now wants to buy about 75 head of cows. Bought and old Mother pig and 10 little pigs 2 weeks old about a mo. Ago paid $66.00 for her isn’t that a terrible price.

Everett & wife are both good workers had a pretty nice garden and she canned lots of things had their potatoes & squash & pumpkins.

Geo. Had Everett put outa sack of potatoes for us and we got around 15 br. in return sold some & still have potatoes. Last spring Everett had a horse struck by lightning he skinned the horse sold the hide and bought 50 little chickens and had them up in the brooder house & ten old hens setting in there and lightning struck it one night and burned it to the ground. Was such a loss to them & made her chicken’s a little late, but she kept right on trying and raised quite a nice little flock. My this war is getting to e serious don’t know when Howard might be called am afraid it won’t be long they are going to take so many in Feb. Helen is 30 miles from Los Angles (ave) 18 mi from Long Beach. They have only had one black out at Orange. Her address is 136 W – Culver, Orange Calif.

Joe & Nettie moved from Dodge to Topeka, the first of June. He has a job traveling for a Farmers Union I guess it is they furnish his car & pay al expenses and get $130.00 a mo.

Well I must close & get to bed it’s 12 P.M. I couldn’t sleep so got up about 10:30 and have been writing letters.

 With lots of Love from

 Aunt Violet & Uncle Geo.

Fred Study 1917

This is another one of those fragile letters from 1917. I decided the less handling the better. Enjoy!

Handwritten Song

I do not know who wrote this. I don't even know if it is a copy. It's a death song from the civil war era. It's very fragile, so decided to make a copy of it. - Don't copy or use as this is a copyright blog. All rights belong to me.

Enjoy!

Dec. -20-63

Dear Mable & Archie

Was so glad to get your letter and pretty Christmas card.

Well we are having some winter weather here for the last couple of weeks ten below zero part of the time and 3 or 4 inches of snow last week and it has been snowing a little today.

Yes Rosa was home for a couple of weeks and we had a wonderful visit she came on her daddys birthday and surprised us all. Jack Powell brought her out from hays to Dons and Don brought Leona and Rosa down here. Don brought a big angle food cake in and set it on the table and he said Dad here is your birthday cake and he says come on down I got you a nice birthday present then he went out the car and brought Rosa and Leona in the house and was we ever surprised but it sure was good to see her.

Mable thanks a million of Shirley, Myrons and familys pictures they’re pictures are sure good thanks again for the picture.

How is Archie feeling now better we hope.

We haven’t seen Wilda and Ray Simpson for quite a while.

Mable do you still work part time yet at the same place.

Leona said she had a nice visit with you when you folks were here last time. I’ll bet you folks will be glad when Shirley and her family comes home. Rosa said her Husband came home one day from work and he asked how she would like to have a Christmas present present and have it early she said she told him she didn’t know and she said why.

And he said how would you like to go home for a visit and go early and your Daddys birthday and she said all right and she said she sure had to hurry and do a lot of work to get ready to come home.

Mable do you remember Ruth and Leonard James Leonard passed away Friday at the medical center hospital a K.C. he was operated on for heart truble they will bring the body to Natoma Sunday eve and the funeral will be Monday at 2 oclock. He will be buried in the cemetary at Natomoa. Ruth is the dauter of Mable and John Powell.

Melvin can’t see very well any more. And he feels so bad about it and so do I. And he isen’t very well either. Well I guess I had better close hoping to hear from you soon.

Love to both of you, Martha and Melvin

1918 - San Francisco Calif - Irvin Wineland

As stated before, this is how letters came in the mail over a 100 years ago.

Page 1. He talks about a Geraldine Black. This has one wonder if this was his first wife, who has not been found.

Now one knows why the letters are copied - as some can't read script writing. This is the oldest letter found so far from Irvin Wineland.

Ketchikan Alaska 1938 - Irvin Wineland

Back in the day – letters were written and the addresses were to the city each person lived in. This was one of those letters –

From I G Wineland, Ketchikan, Alaska

To Mr. Archie E. Wineland, Wallowa, Oregon

Ketchikan Alaska

Sept 16, 38

Dear Bro & Mable & Shirley

Well thanks old man for the lovey card and you too Mable – I certainly appreciate it very much.

Well I just got a letter from Pearl and she’s bound to meet me in Seattle Nov 1st and I think she’s after a new Plymouth she’s been shopping for the past mo in LA. So she said if she drove to Seattle she wanted something good enough to depend on – you know these women, Archie you or I could take an old car and make it O.K. but she’s deserving of it surely I’ve been away up here the past two springs & summers and really I think I’ll sell the Jewel I can get from 2500 to 3000 I was offered 3000 twice last fall like a fool I should of taken it.

I can’t see any real money here in Salmon and that’s two year’s experience over would have to live on fish & rice and I won’t and work most all of the time and never spend a crumb on his boat then probably he could make a few dollars. I’m interested in that school nurry go round it sounds O.K. I don’t see why a person cannot dispose of them to these schools alright.

And that ground – well when Pearl meets me, we sure are going to drive down and spend a few days with you folks and looks things over. I will try and either get into something in the states in a restaurant auto camp or something. So one could make a few dollars with his efforts.

It’s sure disgusting to work like a slave and have nothing to show for it. I want to do a little deer hunting before I go down. Of course if I sell the boat, I’ll go down by Canadian Steamer to Seattle. If not I’ll run the Jewel down and then sell it in the Winter or Spring, where there’s always a demand for boats.

So you sort of can look for us around No – 4 or 5 or 6th

Well tell Shirley Uncle Irv will see her this fall.

We might do a little hunting on the q.t. too I’d sure like to hunk of elk.

Your lov Bro Irvin

This came with the letter -

Note: Family history – Irvin didn’t come down to see Pearl. He stayed in Alaska and met up with Marion whom he later married. There is no record of Irvin getting a divorce. Irvin was married at least 7 times – never divorcing.

Dear Folks:

Thanks for the picture of Myron, Shirley and little Chris – is shure is good of them all. Little Chris has surely grown.

How did you spend your vacation? Did you get to see Knotts berry farms and Disneyland while you were there? Did the flowers arrive there O.K. I tried to time them for your birthday and to enjoy with Shirley.

We sure have lots in bloom now. I have some choice white cattleyas as Vandas and a lot of dichromiums the two later ones are spray types. I had one of my lath houses broken into last week and about a dozen cattleyas were taken, so I reported to Police and also to the Ins. Co. so they said for me to get an appraisal of them from the people on Ballingar way in Seattle where I’d obtained all of those taken except one so have just rec’d the letter from them estimating them at 585.00 so if I can get replacements, I can still come out all right.

Marion has had a bad case of some sort of muscle ailment in one of her legs – but has been to a dr several times and had some hormone shots along with some special pills for muscular pains so feels much better. We sure have a house full of cats, nine, 5 little ones and 4 big ones. We sure have to get rid of the little ones – we have sold one to the Poultry farm where we got our pullets they are taking one little female and we’ll see a pet shop in Honolulu about the other four.

We have lunch aboard the President Hoover a couple of weeks ago, the 2nd steward is a friend of ours he wrote us from Yakahama Japan to meet him. He is in England now for a visit with his sister, we sure enjoyed it very much. We went up in a valley a couple of miles from home and gathered several buckets of strawberry guavas today. They make the finest Jelly I’ve ever eaten – they have 5 times the amt of Vitamin C as oranges has.

Marion is writing her sister in Vancouver BC, the one that visited us for a month, she wrote and said she sure would like to be here. I see Texas beat Oklahoma yesterday, and Stanford took the Huskies.

Write when you can –

Aloha Marion and Irvin

Dear Archie & Mabel,

Grandfather has gotten so he can’t write much any more so I am his secretary. Nettie sent this letter here to him and he asked me to send it on and write a few words. He is pretty weak most of the time but not sick. Eal’s about as usual but can’t walk without help. Can’t read much any more either so the time goes slow for him. The rest of us are O.K.  The girls very busy with last of school stuff. Tonight is the Junior Senior banquet. Elaine has a floor length dress of pale blue embroidered organdy, white sandals and a corsage of fresh flowers in pink & white. Has had her hair done at the beauty parlor and is taking a little rest before she gets ready. (That is probably something like what will be doing at your house, 13 or 14 years hence.) Well, you will enjoy seeing Shirley enjoy it and just think what the folks who don’t have them to plan for and spend their money on miss. Elizabeth is to serve so she will enjoy it too. She will wear a navy blue dress and tiny white apron and a white thing like a maids cap in her hair. She getting ready now for the waitresses must be there by 6 o’clock. Wilma and Richard are playing ball on the west side of the house. Kathleen has gone to town on an errand and Wm is of course out with the truck. Business is picking up now so Wm is pretty busy.

We hope you are all O.K. again. Write when you have time. Joe sent a letter of yours to Father, Archie & her enjoyed it a lot. So did the rest of us. You write a very interesting letter.

Love and best wishes, Katie

Dear Father,

How are you. I hope you are getting along O.K. we have been having a few nice days. I been irrigating my Garden. It looks nice. I had a nice long letter from Nettie this week.

Geo left from Utah yesterday morning. He rode to Denver with Jess Terill and was going to take a Train or Bus from there. His Uncle Geo got him a job out there on a Ranch.

Frank Montgomery’s wife is being buried to day at quinter.

“2”

I got a letter from Harold yesterday. He says the weather out there has been nice for the last 10 days. He said he had to work until midnite three nites this week. He gets pretty tired.

I had a letter from Geo this week he said he took 6 fat Hogs to Grand Junction to the Packing House and had them Butchered and cured. It costs 4 cts per pound and 1 ct for the lard, he said he took back 1000 lbs of Groceries. They are a lot cheaper there than in Moah.

He said he brought his cattle across the River and they  “3” were fat enough for Beef. He puts them across the River in the Fall and don’t feed them a thing. His wife and the Boys will move back to the Ranch as soon as school is out.

The sowed wheat looks fine but the Volintue don’t amount to anything. I was talking with Ottis Benton last week. He has 1300 acres of Good wheat up by Goodland.

I don’t think John has over 20 or 30 acres left most all of his was Volintue.

There is lots of Barley and Oats. They look good. There is a lot of corn going to be planted around here.

Glasco, Kans –

Dear Nettie & Mattie:

Was glad to get Netties card – had thought of you so many times {perina} . I have so many to write to & it is more of a task any more. – I try to write the boys often – I used to depend on Adaf for some of the writing – we rather took turns writing the boys – but now I have that to do & of course write to Betty often as I can. I am always glad to hear from you girls. I have been thinking so much about your Father & thought I would write to him but just haven’t – I wrote to Wm. & Katie & George’s & Ruth & Cy – after we were there – but haven’t heard anything more – well we did get a Christmas Card too from Martha & John. I saw by the Salina Journal they had a car accident & have intended writing them – I also wanted to tell you about the Morton Fletcher family also the Chet Wentworth family that went from here to Ft. Collin’s. The Fletchers are home now Jim just now told me. The Wentworths are in a restaurant or Café – she sent me such a pretty card of Sympathy after Adaf was gone. I appreciated it but never have written her – The oldest boy was here a week during the Easter vacation.  Ella & Jack Collend line at Grangeville Ida they are out about 40 mi. up in the Mts. May “Heggendorn” Fadely went to see them a year or so ago – Mary & Frank just moved to Boring, Oregon – Box 418 – RR #1 – the first of the year – it’s 11 miles East of Portland Oregon – Eunice lives at Joseph, Ida - & Myra Hockersmith lives at Kennewick – Wash – think Warren is with Eunice now or was a short time ago. Eunice Bentley – I couldn’t think of her last name – her husband died – Myras husband has been sick a long time – It would be nice if Archie could meet some of those people. We have been real well all winter – Harry is with us & has been since the first of the year – He can do quite a little choring – Jim was elected Trustee of Solomon Township this spring so he is away through the day so much – has been assessing but is nearly through now. We were down to Beth’s last Wed – Little Mary is quite a girl – 3 years old now – she talks so plain & is cute as can be – we enjoy her so much – Fred’s cousin Anna Ogan has been keeping house for him since in the fall – she is real nice & is lots of company for me. She is a cousin of John’s wife too. This has been a very windy day & so warm – We’ve had such cool weather for so long – Have had lots of snow & rain but these windy days dry out the soil. Maybe it will blow up another rain. Write some times we would be so glad to hear from you – would like to go & see your Father once more will try to if possible – Lots of love to all – Allie & Jim

Sat. Morn

Dear Father –

Another nice morning – I didn’t get up til 7:20. Am kind of lazy – Albin’s were out last nite & M. & Bob came so we played 3 or 4 games of “Pinochle” – We girls beat the boys – first game we’ve played for quite awhile.

I did not help M – yesterday – but I went to town to get a few things – also went to see a Chiropodist about my bunion –

Thought maybe he could suggest some thing to wear on it to help it – but most things have to be made to order & cost so much.

Did not have such good sales the last 2 days.

I am sending Allie’s letter for you to read, then wish U would put it in an envelope & send to Archie as he wants to know the Palmer girls addresses.

Joe re-built his trailer yesterday. I am going to pack some things & get them out of the basement today.

Got your card of Thurs – yesterday – we will ask Dales folks to take you some wine. Joe will go & get it & take it to Dale before his mother-in-law leaves. I wonder why its so expensive there.

Well I expect Helen will be glad to have Howard in Calif. Suppose H’s wife will go as soon as school is out.

George will have some long trips to see his youngsters.

Mrs. Albins are some better – but not healed yet Don’t know anything of interest. So, will close as it’s Most 9 oclock.

Lovingly, Nettie

Well we are all OK but always busy – have planted some garden, beens are blooming and radishes are about large enough to eat, planted some onions (Spanish) beets carrots parsnips and Peas all are doing good – they plant peas beets beans etc here in dec.

Our gladiolas and Dahlias are up 6 or 8 inches – Roses that I planted in Jan, most all are in bud. Our avocados some have bloomed once and quite a few have set on and are as large as marbles. Some bloom as many as three times.

We have two naval orange trees I planted last fall and both are blooming but they probably won’t set much fruit on this year, it usually takes a couple of years for them to produce much fruit.

When you write Shirley and family give them our regards and helo –

Yes that wood I asked about comes from the East but not the USA. It comes from Ceydon Burma India also from Carta Rica and Gueatamola as they grow Teak, Rose wood and the Zebra wood comes from the Guianas – both English and French Guiana, but as Seattle is a Port I thought that perhaps there would be some place where they import it – there’s not a place in San Diego. I’ll get in touch with some one in Houston Tex as they do a lot of importing from Central and South America. I’d like to get some Osage Orange from the Mid West sometime.

I have some sandal wood cawphor, Koa, coffee which is pure white, Milo a dark deep brown wood and some monkey pod that I shipped from Hawaii. I’ve made some lamps bowls and a pretty good table from some of the wood I bought from Hawaii.

I’ve worked up some Mau Zanita wood into some curios. Also have been carving some African wall masks – have a few orders for some.

I also work up some black locust which is pretty good but it has a tendency to split unless it is cured pretty good. Marion’s sister who used to live in Seattle and her husband was a truck driver at Boeings he retired last year and they sold their place and bought a Home trailer and travel Canada and eastern part of the states and Florida they spent a month at Phoenix and will arrive here in Fallbrook this weekend and then on up to Seattle, I suppose as they leave a son and his family living in Alderwood Manor. I suppose that they want to see the Fair.

I think Marion probably will come up later on.

I’ll have to look after the cats, avocados etc, unless we could get someone to stay here.

I thought that Uncle George and wife would drop in on us, before they go back to that wind swept Kansas. They sure had a heck of a winter there this year. I believe it has snowed for three solid months all through the mid west.

You folks had better pack up and come on down for a visit and see some of this part of the country, for a change.

We’ve sure used our Fireplace this winter it got down to 32 a couple of nights but only for a couple of hours, it hasn’t done any damage to any of our plants or fruit.

Wonder where old Brown is? Do you ever see any one from Pac Marine?

Now Write

Love to all,

Marion & Irvin.

Note: Would love to find where some of Irvin Wineland's carvings went. He was well know for his carvings.

Joe Seaman's Passing - Letter From Geo White to Archie Wineland

Osborne, Kansas

August 2st, 1961

Dear Archie and Mable

Joe passed away last Thursday, has been in hospital about two months. Guess the fortune teller told Mable the truth. I was down to see him a couple times. He changed his mind about be buried at Winfield and was buried beside Nettie in Natoma cemetary.

He sure suffered, His corpse didn’t look like Joe. I had a time getting hold of Bob as he was in the hills and I finally got him and he was at funera. Also Wm and Katie as they were in Bolder but are going on to St. Louis to see Richard and then are going back to Calif and then come back next July when they can get their house as it is rented until then. Dr. said out there that Wm would have to come back and take more treatments. He can’t walk without crutches yet.

We are having nice cool weather now and plenty of moisture.

As Ever Uncle Geo.

Friday A.M. May 20” 1932

Dear Archie and Mable.

Your letter of Wednesday on it was mailed from Natoma on Wednesday. Don’t know when you did write it for it had no date. Don’t understand what you mean about my not answering all your and Mabels letters right away as soon as I get them. For I am anxious to get letters from home so I answer them at once. Yours is the first one I have had from home this week and if I don’t get one this afternoon I won’t get one before Monday for they always come in the afternoon from home and the mailman does not come Saturday afternoons and after one has lived 54 years in one place that is his home and he wants to hear from that home and the folks. There could be no one that that me better than Bob and Mattie but Bob works night and does not get up until noon and he is always working in the afternoon fixing up the place and he is making it look nice. There was a barn when they bought it and last fall he tore it down there was a lot of good lumber in it and he put up a building 30 +40 made a garage to hold his cars and there finished off two rooms in it for sleeping rooms. He and Mattie sleep out there and I in the house. It is better for him for there is no dnoise from the folks that live in the home. We go out every Monday morning to the golf ground and he and Mttie play 9 holes. I go with them and I set in the car and road. Last Monday I played 3 holes done better than I expected for I had not played for 3 years. In 4 more days the fishing season will open and then Bob will go fishing in the afternoons and I will ride up in the (?) with him and take a book. He drives up 20 to 30 miles and sometimes more. We have been writing to Fred and Bess to come out for a few days. For they have not seen them for 8 years. He has wrote that he thinks he will come and if he does I will go back with him and stop and visit the folks there for a while. I have not been feeling the best in the world. They say the flu takes a long time to get over. I am in no pain but weak just all gone. I take a walk every day. Walk down once a week to get shaved. Once or twice a week to the Library most every day to the Post Office. I have wrote a 175 letters and 40 cards since I have been here. You say you have been having lives spells like John Meyer. I think Ruth wrote that Mr. Meyers had been sick did not say what with but that he was better. How is Floyd Meyers. Glad that Pat done will on his cattle. Tell Pat halo for me. You sure had god luck getting coyotes what is the bounty on them. You don’t know what hard times back there as they do in a big city for you get enough to eat and they don’t in the city. Bob says there is from 25 to 75 men every night at the RR shop the RR lets them ride in the box cars and sleep in them and they are on the go all the time. They will go around the slices and get a better meat a few potatoes bread & c and then cook it. You know in about all the streams in Colo there is a little gold not much but now when so many are out of work they are panning out gold. Bob and I see sometimes as many as 25 up in the Mts. They say sometimes they get 2 or 3 dollars a day. Well I guess this is enough. Try and write me again soon. With lots of love to you all I am

Dear Archie,

Just a line this morning as …..have to go to town. My dear boy I have ……put you in the same class as Irvin…..some temper. But I think that….ndmother influence made you see……between right and wrong……ery selfish and sees only what…..benifit. I have mislade his letter…the one from his wife but they are….The one he wrote from Honolulo …never said a word about the trouble I think he is in the navy or army. The other day I got an ash tray from him made out of some kind of wood. About those horses from Carl Miller that will be all right I will sign the note He will try and get over to see the game a week from Sunday.

Yours in haste – Grandfather.

2nd Note: I believe he is talking about Archie’s brother – Irvin Wineland.

Dear Nephew:

Got your letter, wanted to come up last Sunday but didn’t get to and today is too muddy, Will try and come up when the roads get good – and before that old hen chickens are all gone. Saw in the Natoma paper about your Father’s death. Did you learn any particulars It might be well for you to investigate and if there is any property, to put in for your share – Your mother was a hard worker and a good manager – and when she died, there had a very good start, and you are entitled to your share.

Say these rains & snows are sure fine for the wheat, and I guess we all could stand for a good crop.

As Ever - George

Note: The property referred to was sold by the 3rd wife to her brother for $1. Then he sold it for a profit. It had been sold by the time Archie had an attorney. All involved where crooks. There was nothing anyone could do about it back in the 1920's. Archie lost everything that belonged to him and his brother.

Letter From Silas White - Oct 21, 1932

Ft. Collins Colo Oct 21” 1932

Dear Mabel and Archie,

Your good letter come day before yesterday. Sure glad to get it for I have not been getting many latly. Archie got my card letting about the boy killing the deer. While I did not get even a shot or see a buck I did injoy the trip for it was the finest kind of weather which we can have in Oct and you know that is the finest kind of wether. There were lots of hunters some women and some of the women got a deer. Some hunted the four days and I’d not see a deer. Wish you could have had some of the meat  Bob give a lot away sent some to his friends in Denver one of them was here last night and played Pinochel he said it was the fresest – he ever eat they were fat one of them a three year old and the other five. The girls caved up a lot. Bob and Joe went to Denver yesterday they asked me to go but I did not care to go. They are going out to play golf this a.m. Nettie has been out four times and Joe once Last Tuesday. Joe and Nettie went up to the cabin it survived up there four inches they stoped all night there is beds and everythings and a nice big fire in the fireplace is pleasant in a cold nite. Dale I think is about love picking apples. They were here night before last and he said he though he would send his and the young man (a cousin of hers) back and he would stay. She has been homesick. It has been lonesome for her as they have been away at work all day. She was up here several times and some of us was down there. I think this was the longest she was ever away from her mother. I think Dale maybe homesick. When she and the little one are gone. There is not much work to be had here but Dale will find it if anyone can. Joe and a man that lives in the home here have just gone up the rets 40 miles. And Bob and the girls to the golf grounds. It is sure a nice day. I will stay here and do some writing and reading this is the kind of weather one likes to be out doors. I don’t know yet when I will be home If Joe and Nettie go back I think I will go with them. I don’t feel like spending money on the train. Wish you would write me how the cattle sell in K.C. I have been feeling OK ever since I have been here except – a little cold the first few days. Hoping you both are well and with lots of love I am
